There’s lots of good things about the cities, but once you’ve moved away from them for a while it’s just shocking when you go back to visit, it’s a little like getting suddenly dropped back into a crowded university with all the hustle and noise after spending the holidays with your cats at a nice quiet retreat. There’s lots I miss about the city life, and in some ways it was much easier and more relaxing then for me. Now I hardly have time for TV, music, reading. And I’m up earlier and work even later into the day. Sure the hours I spent commuting weren’t great, but I would read, watch a show on my phone, or listen to music and relax (if I could find a seat, that is!) now it’s in a way quieter, and more busy at the same time!

There’s lots I miss about the city life, and in some ways it was much easier and more relaxing then for me. Now I hardly have time for TV, music, reading. Boat rides are great for reading; I can't hear anything over the motor so it's no good talking to me. If I have to be on a barge I read & crotchet ~ but even when I lived in Sydney I found the noise & crowd factor problematic. The one thing I really used to miss was the big 2nd hand bookstores ~ then the internet came along... They do do late boats [last one midnight] some days now so it is possible to do QPAC & see a play or the ballet or a music concert [so long as you have your own mainland transport]~ though we used to have to run rehearsal nights because the boats weren't so accommodating.

Of course you are both right. There's nowhere really nice to eat out on the island. Even takeaway is limited but I have lived here a long time [over 30 years] & we don't even have traffic lights or lanes, street lights & roundabouts so even travelling locally is something of a shock to the system & stressful just because I'm not doing it every day ~ & whatever I do I'm really aware of 1st & last boat times. The funny thing is I don't mind travelling on the highway for longer distances. Vroom, vroom.

Me too! We have two stop signs, one yield sign, and one 48 hr parking sign... that’s it! There are a few sections of road that are paved and have two lanes! We are so spoiled!

We need the cities to make the world go round but my middle son wants to move back to the island. Couldn't wait to get off *The Rock*, then discovered peak hour traffic. He's had enough. My YD loves living on the mainland with all the convenience. She can get food @ midnight when she comes out of rehearsal, buy vegan take~away, go to the movies on a whim...& then tells me she wants several hundred acres of land where she will put a house in the middle of it all & have lots of chickens!

You'll find this funny. When I was going to university, I did my homework at the bowling alley. The white noise was perfect.

White noise is always good. I used to do my homework on the train all through High school. I had a longish commute.

It was crazy back then. I'd get out of class and go straight to the bowling alley. Order a sandwich and start doing my homework. The whole time I was going to university I worked nights.
