Boat rides are great for reading; I can't hear anything over the motor so it's no good talking to me. If I have to be on a barge I read & crotchet ~ but even when I lived in Sydney I found the noise & crowd factor problematic. The one thing I really used to miss was the big 2nd hand bookstores ~ then the internet came along...

They do do late boats [last one midnight] some days now so it is possible to do QPAC & see a play or the ballet or a music concert [so long as you have your own mainland transport]~ though we used to have to run rehearsal nights because the boats weren't so accommodating.
Of course you are both right.

There's nowhere really nice to eat out on the island. Even takeaway is limited but I have lived here a long time [over 30 years] & we don't even have traffic lights or lanes, street lights & roundabouts so even travelling locally is something of a shock to the system & stressful just because I'm not doing it every day ~ & whatever I do I'm really aware of 1st & last boat times. The funny thing is I don't mind travelling on the highway for longer distances. Vroom, vroom.
