Ribh's D'Coopage

I'm out in my dressing gown to let my girls out in the morning and the "littlies" have been pecking at my legs and grabbing the dressing gown tie. Do they think I'm made of food?

Look at me, look at me, no look at me, I'm cute, look at me, look at me, no look at me, I'm cute, look at me, my feathers are prettier, look at me, no look at me, I'm cute, look at me, is that food, look at me, no look at me, I'm cute, look at me!

Lol:lau:gig

A bit like Irish stew then? Almost a pity I don't eat meat.;)

Just wondering @Ribh what kind of vegetarian proteins do you tend to use aside from eggs? Despite being meat farmers and proponents of sustainable and well raised and processed meats, Andrew and I do enjoy vegetarian dishes quite a lot as well. We are slowly working on breaking my mom of her meat and potatoes with tinned canned vegetable :sick habits. We just really dislike the fake meats and tofu (except in miso soups).

Do you have a large selection of mushrooms in Australia? Often portabellos are used here for texture and their flavor, and lentils and beans make up the primary protein sources (aside from eggs) in vegetarian diets. I also enjoy one veggie burger, the “go-nuts” one, which is made here on island by a local chef (I actually tried it and liked it before I met Andrew or knew about Saturna), sadly Andrew is allergic to walnuts so that’s a no-go for him.

It’s so cute when they are small and doing it! 3 of my Roosters don’t like Shorts and sandals. Mr Marans, Sammy, and Chickie Hawk. The bachelor boys don’t seem to mind as much. Granted it could have been the red trim for Mr Marans. And Chickie Hawk is always a bit of a jerk. But Sammy is most certainly anti leg and sandals. Which makes life interesting when he’s free ranging and We are working outside a in the heat.

Ah, chicken politics! Still better behaved than our lot in Canberra at question time
Oh gosh! Yes! John used to watch question time but I found it immensely distressing. Grown ups behaving in ways my kids were never allowed to behave!

You seem to be their rooster now. Beginning food and making sure everyone gets some. Welcome to their flock.
I figured I'd become the rooster figure.... The good thing is they are far more likely to behave when I'm around. Bad thing, I don't seem to have a Head Honcho Hen.:idunno

Yes. :lau

I adore mushrooms so that's good. They're a whole food. And I'm a nut freak. I adore any & all nuts. I just love having that crunch factor! I will eat lentils but actually prefer chickpeas [crunch factor :) ] & am not a fan of tofu. Beans aren't the thing out here they are in America. What people tend to mean by beans is green beans straight out of the garden.

Do you have a large selection of mushrooms in Australia?
Yes. Lots & lots of different varieties though they can be a bit harder to source on the island. I'm very fond of the little button mushrooms because they can be eaten raw & are super in a diane sauce over a baked potato or just on toast with maybe a poached egg.

This morning's clouds~
Because I can't help myself.

I thought they sorta looked like weird dogs chasing each other.

Why most there always be one person to stir the pot?! Warning LONG rant ahead...

I have 1 direct neighbor. It's a young married couple with a new baby. When we first moved in we were very friendly to each other, then suddenly one day the wife no longer talked to us. The husband still did. Now that they have the baby we rarely see them and just exchange cordial hellos now, with the husband only.

This weekend my landlord received a letter in the mail stating I was out of compliance with my chickens. It stated that the chickens are often off my property and have caused damage to the neighbors grass and flowers. It also stated the neighbor spoke to us about this and we did nothing.

It's all just a bunch of lies and twisted truths. My chickens free range when I am outside with them. If they cross the property line, which they do, I am over there chasing them right back over to my side. The wife has been sitting out on her deck when a chicken has wondered over while chasing a bug and I go right after them to bring them back where they belong. She never said ONE WORD to me! I'm most upset that she involved the boro when all she had to say was "keep the chickens off my lawn".

I spoke with the codes office, I explained how my chickens are always in the coops or runs unless I am outside with them. He said what I am doing is fine, I just need to keep them off her yard. I said no problem sir, I'm sorry you were involved in this simple matter.

I don't have to change anything I have been doing, but it sure makes me mad that she is that petty to make things up.

Ok rant over...

It's sad when you try so hard not to be a nuisance to the neighbours! I'm lucky in both lots of neighbours love my chickens ~ but then I never allow them to stay where they don't belong so the neighbours don't really get how little time it takes a chicken to turn a lovely garden into a moonscape! :(

Neighbours who cause trouble for trouble's sake need to get a grip on the truly important things in life!

Unfortunately that happens WAY too often. It's amazing how some folks handle things, and amazing not in a good way.
