Well, just to really confuse the issue a floor *rug* is also called a rug ...or a mat. A long one for a hallway would be a runner. I think we use words more in the British way than you do, certainly more so when I was younger. And when you read as much as I do you pick up words & incorporate them into your vocabulary ~ like mithered. Go ahead; ask me what it means...
I travel for my job and sometimes when flights don’t work I wind up on a long car trip. I am in the middle of one right now. It’s a 7 hour drive home. On long trips like this Satellite radio is a must-have. Many times I will put on the Radio Classics channel where they replay old radio shows from the days before TV. Today I was listening to a Sherlock Holmes episode from some time in the 30s or 40s. Holmes and Watson were traveling in a carriage when the wind picked up and Holmes said to Watson, “....pull that RUG tighter Watson, the wind has a real chill to it.”
If not for you @Ribh I would not have understood that line at all and in fact would have been very confused by it!
