Ribh's D'Coopage

Me too! But I can’t figure out why they do it. If I disturb them after dark (which I do quite often because I like to make sure they are all tucked in for the night) they all stare down at my boots even though my face is at eye level to them. I have been doing some experiments with my headlamp and they seem to expect light to come from the floor. I think it is because when the sun comes up they see it through their door which is low down. So when I come with my headlamp they expect the light to be coming from there.

That is an interesting observation. You could be right. It could also be that it is easier to look down and around than it is to look over their shoulders. That's always been my theory.

So I discarded the 'easier to look down' theory because mine roost facing the door - so when I open the door we are 'nose-to-beak' if you see what I mean. If I have introduced light into the situation they immediately peer down at my boots. I do have bright orange boots but I think they are too muddy to be the source of such fascination. I will try and get a photo again tonight - in any case I want to do a daily photo at roosting to test my theory that since Scary was taken they have started to 'mix it up' in terms of who sleeps where (I need the photo because I keep forgetting to write down who was where on the roost).

Roosting position is a major part of the pecking order. There is one position on our roost that my alpha Lilly will fight to the death over. Patsy and Daisy each claimed the same spot. It is clearly the alpha hen sleeping location.

I've posted this elsewhere but..

This is one of the hens who I think would move in with Treacle if I could house him separately. The hen is Ruffle's last daughter and she's called Hurry.

Moon, she would be up a tree by now if the rest of the tribe showed the slightest inclination to go up as well.
