Oh, a dissenter.I’m so over the whole selfish, self-absorbed, individualistic Westerner thing. It’s been bugging me for a while now, I’ve just been thinking I’m becoming a cranky old womanbut lately it’s beginning to really get me down. Whether it’s appalling motorists who tail-gate and have the ‘must get in front’ mentality, people who breed chickens to be little egg factories and don’t care what happens to them after a certain age or those who panic-buy Ventolin because it apparently helps you breathe better if you get Coronavirus, I’m increasingly dismayed by people’s mind-boggling selfishness.
And then I see behaviour that (somewhat) restores my faith in humanity. Today my husband was doing a long bike-ride on a quiet country road when he got hit by a car. It could have been a lot worse, he ended up with cuts and bruises and no breaks but it was a hit-and-run. There was a witness, who stopped and checked he was ok and the lady behind him stopped as well (she called me). The 1st Responders were Rural Fire Service who checked him out thoroughly. He was taken to the nearest hospital where the staff were great, and a couple of hours later the police had been given the name and address of a suspect. There is a strong probability that the driver was drunk and will probably get off with a slap on the wrist, but everyone else today was amazing. My husband said he hoped the guy was drunk because if he wasn’t, it means he deliberately hit him.
So I know that there are good people around, sometimes it just feels really hard to see them.

I got so over our current economic and political model about 20 years ago. I wasn't all that keen on it before then. It's one of the reasons I came out here despite the problems. If I hadn't come here I would have gone to Sicily, or Greece.

(That’s me, chasing the goshawks away).

I know you, like us, are very self~sufficient in some ways but it's like in a generation people have forgotten how to get along without certain stuff. Boggles me mind, it does.
Like seriously, people are fighting over toilet paper. Toilet paper!!! I'm not that old, but when I was a kid Brisbane suburbs still didn't have sewerage. It was a dunny down the back, squares of newspaper on a nail, & a bin of sawdust. I hope we grow some common sense soon!
