Ribh's D'Coopage

When we bought our property the first thing we did was put in our well & we planted treelines all the way around the area where our house would be! That was back in 1991! We needed a wind break & we wanted to provide food and shelter for birds and other small animals! It has also made our yard more private! Our property was sand and sagebrush, we have planted over 300 trees & shrubs!
This is our largest treeline it is 5 rows deep, 1 row of shrubs, 2 rows of deciduous & 2 rows of evergreens! It slows down the wind & definitely keeps our place cooler! Beyond the tree's it is still sand and sagebrush!

Wow, Who mows your lawn? Or should I say "Golf Course"

Are they endangered! Honeybee's are becoming endangered here, there is some sort of mite that is destroying hives and now we have Japanese Murder Hornets, they have been seen here in Washington state...they can decimate a hive in short order. They are trying to find and destroy them, but that seems like a daunting task!
We got Asian Hornets here a couple of years ago. We went from 5 hives to 1 in a year.
The good news is apparently the bees, or some of them at least, have learned how to combat the hornets and the hives are surviving.

Yep. People don't plant trees because the leaves get in the gutters & the pool & it's madness in this climate. They are a super efficient cooling system. We have been inches deep in gum blossom for the last month but it only lasts a few weeks & feeds so many species.
It makes me mad.:he
If people want neat and tidy, get a flat in a city!!

I had a maple tree in my side yard so large that I could not reach around it. It shaded the western side of my house. It also filled my gutters and pool skimmer with helicopter seeds but it was a trade off that we both accepted and we lived in harmony with each other.

Then the township decided that it was going to infiltrate the sewer line and they cut it down. No matter what I wanted. Mrs BY Bob and I both cried to see it go. It was spectacular. All of those sunsets I post look right through where that tree stood. 😥

I love maples but they don't do well in our climate. We tried. We had 1/2 a dozen miniatures in the bush house where they were surviving quite well but we lost them when we planted them out. :( So many things have a shortish lifespan too. I had a Yesterday, today & forever which needs replacing & a night jasmine. The scent was wonderful! I am determined to try for a lilac if I can find a spot it might just survive...I love scented plants!

We do, the first year we used a push mower:eek:, then we went to a lawn tractor that took 1.5 hours, now we have a ZTR brought the time down to 45 minutes! We also practice our golf back there 😉 & played baseball with the kids when they were little...on a smaller scale of course!

At present I have a lettuce mix, cos lettuce, a salad mix, french beans, tomatoes, parsley, rosemary, & rainbow silverbeet. I will probably add lebanese cucumber when I can find some. Some things it's just not worth growing when there is just the 2 of us & some things I just find too difficult & not worth the effort when they are cheap enough to buy ~ like carrots & onions.
Growing what thrives and not what one fancies is a hard lesson.
On this mountain people have got it pretty much sorted; apart from the main house residents here of course who still try to grow stuff that isn't suited to teh climate or the soil.
