No. But after Alex's trauma this morning I'm not game to risk Suyin in the big coop. I don't think she can manage the jumps well any more & I know she'd try because she likes the top roost. She feels very fragile ~ but she she's one tough bird! Medh is company for the present & she seems content enough to just be the 2 of them.

At one stage I was seriously thinking of running an all bantam flock from the small coop but I really need it for isolation, broodies, sickies & integration so this is not a long term solution.

It's very smart to not force things with her right now. I'd want to get her back up to fighting weight before I mix her back in if I could arrange it.

Yep. I should ask Michelle what she was feeding her hens. Mine all seem to loose weight rather than gain it & they're on premium feed & it's always available plus they have tones of leaf litter to forage through, scraps & treats.

With Ned and Lucky I had to watch Aurora for the same blocking behavior. It is a thing with chickens.

Sometimes the salmons are still faffing about at dusk because Tegan throws a peck at them in the doorway.

I found ISA's really laid back. It's a pity they are so short lived as they are wonderful birds in many ways.

Chickie was so laid back she needed a sun-roof.

Yes, I knew you were southern hemisphere, I just wasn't sure which season you were currently in ~ or more to the point, the sort of weather it produces.

My running mate @ uni was majoring in English Lit with me but her 1st love was animal biology & that was her minor. I have read a lot of wonderful books on her recommendation [& her understanding that I'm no scientist & don't do gruesome] but that is a new one on me.

What has annoyed me most about the whole covid affair is how inconsistent the guidelines have been. For example there are signs up all over our ferries telling us to keep our 1 meter distance from each other then they pack us on the boats like sardines. I think we've been had & royally screwed over.

I know almost nothing of modern African history ~ any of it's history is sketchy @ best~ but I'm not a fan of anyone carrying guilt for the sins of the past for one simple fact: all races, all nations, all peoples, @ some point in their history, have committed atrocities against those who are *other*. The fact is ALL peoples can be the pits. Black Africans traded in white slaves for centuries before America was settled by whites. The middle eastern world is still rife with slavery. The Irish were indentured slaves. The Japanese boiled people in oil or flayed them alive. The Persians & Assyrians, the Mongols, the Goths, the Sythians, Russkis & Saxons all had reputations for ferocity & barbarity that is hard to imagine. It is how we, as individuals, choose to act that determines our guilt ~ or lack thereof.

Yep. We actually call the Ibis a bin chicken. They do very well in urban environments as they scavenge so well.

I got my nephew a kid’s book called “Bin Chicken” for his 2nd birthday!

We've something like 51 fires burning out of control in our part of the state. Some are to the south in the hinterland. Some west in an area that is about out of all water as well. We have strong winds not helping but the fires aren't affecting us. It's just worrying as our fire season hasn't started yet & there are lots of warnings out.

I've always found it weird that there is a "fire season". Sounds like "hunting season" when it is legal and OK to hunt, so legal and OK to start fires...

Even with the Bantams the rule here is, no perches higher than jump height; that's around 250 to 350 millimeters. It's not the getting up that's a problem, it's the getting down. Even if one fits ladders and platforms I've found the chickens will just jump from perch to ground.
Jumping out of a tree is rather different. There is room to open their wings and glide/fly to the ground. If a chicken jumps out of the Magnolia tree here they tend to glide/fly a minimum of 4 meters along the horizontal axis, often more before landing. There are not many coops that give that much room.
These days Fat Bird favours the lower roost in the tribes coop. It's an easy jump to the floor.
