Would a hawk be less likely to bother the song birds if the feeder is hung up under the porch roof outside Eowyn's window? It seems to me they wouldn't be able to "stoop " if there is a roof in the way.

I wonder too. I do think any gathering of song birds would bring them around and my guess is the song birds would gather on the roof above while waiting their turn at the feeder.

Marie, the active ingredient is ichthammol which is also called by its chemical names ammonium bituminosulfonate or ammonium bituminosulphonate. The ointment will also contain some carrying agent like paraffin wax but that is just to make it usable it is not an active ingredient.
It is an unusual name and it is not a branded product so it has many brand names usually using some part of the 'ichth' name.
I posted earlier a link to a site that has it in the UK.
It is a good thing to have in a home medicine cabinet for people or chickens!

You guys seem to be doing it really tough in the UK.

Some things are impossible too find and there seems too be confusion on almost every level here.
Above all I just pray that this country becomes a little more fair and honest. Truth is becoming a very rare being a person brought up with honesty I find it hard too take.

@Aussie-Chookmum : as promised, my ginger jars. I love everything about these: the colour, the shape, the size...just perfect. They also have a seal on the lid, which I wasn't sure they would have. I am absolutely delighted with them.

My girls are still leaving the occasional feather in the coop but I think the moulting is slowing down now.

I've never heard of Triple C either.

I'm a sucker for pretty things. I don't mind paying a little more for something both practical & beautiful.
