I have terrible luck this year. Bought 13 chicks in 2 batches from a local hatchery I have used for the last 8 years with out a problem. Of the first 8 chicks 5 died in the first 12 hours. In the second batch of 6 I lost all of them in 36 hours. I've been doing the same stuff for 8 years with out a problem. Of the 3 remaining I have 1 Blue Barred olive egger who is the Godzilla of chicks at 3 weeks old. I also have 2 Black Austrolorps. 1 of them developed lameness at 10 days old. I though it might be a spraddle leg type injury since Godzilla chick runs over the others. She was scooting around on her stomach. I brought her in and put her in hobbles. 4 days later the hobbles are off and she isn't much better. Her stance from the front is wide and from the back she is cow hocked. She walks like she is drunk, very deliberate with some wobbles and stumbles. She eats and drinks great. Is preening and flew 18 inches yesterday while I was cleaning her cage. I've given them all Nutri Drench in their water since last night. The other remaining Austrolorp is half the size of her sister and they are all the same age. I wanted to put her back with the other 2 tonight. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have well water? You may be doing everything exactly the same while something as ordinary as your water supply may have changed quality due to changing weather and rainfall. Also, if fracking is occurring in your vicinity the chemicals can contaminate the ground water. Baby chicks are extremely vulnerable to water quality issues.

No fracking, I know that. Both the hatchery and I have well water. Never an issue before. It's driving me nuts. The little lame one is healthy aside from her drunken waddle.

A drunken waddle can be caused by dehydration, so give electrolytes with sugar. That may snap her out of it.

There's also a chance of it being a riboflavin deficiency, so find that B vitamin and give her some. Dose isn't crucial as she will poop out an excess.

Update on possible rickets. Shesbeen on Nutri Drench for 36 hours and major improvement. Back with her 2 remaining sisters and I've put all of them on it. I'll keep them on this till Saturday when the Rooster Booster b complex is delivered.
