ridge vent and drip edge questions

Roofing "expert" couldn't find the hooked blade utility knife to cut shingles with... and the tool "expert" did not know what a manual impact driver was. LOL

I too did drip edges all around, but I have a shed roof. For ventilation I left a gap between the roof and the siding all the way around the entire coop. That gap is probably 2-3 inches tall all the way around the structure. We have average summer days around 70F and winter average nights of around 35F.... so mild year round and I'd venture to say that I could probably go with even more ventilation with just 8 birds inside a 6x8 structure all night. However, I am used to birds living in tractors where a tarp was their roof. Gable end vents might be a good idea just becuase chickens give off lots of humidity.

Hi, Hope this photo of my second coop shows you well enough how the drip edge should look. You definitely need it on the rake edge as well as previous posters explained. It helps protect the edge of your sheathing(osb) and direct the rain drops away from the facia. good luck,
Erik

I even used it on the small roof over exterior nest boxes.

I think what you mean is some guy who works there, probably for near minimum wage, who most likely had no prior knowledge of building materials, but who figures you will take his advice when he tries to SELL you something in stock rather than taking a chance you'll go somewhere else to buy what you really need

ditto. Try to watch for someone who DOESN'T work there but is buying and ask them. I got some good plumbing advice from a guy who was in the department and didn't work there. I would have messed it up if he hadn't told me how.
