..... it is one of the most difficult decisions to make... we so want to keep them close to us, but we must realise that there comes a time when we must put our wishes to one side and do what is best for our beloved friends.... I know what you are going through, had to do the same thing a few years back with one of our old horses.. (he was 30).... never forgotten old "Loppy".. never will, and we took some of his mane also.... stayed with him while he went to sleep and stroked his face.... he knew he was not alone.... bet he is running like a young horse in animal heaven ....

Your post just breaks my heart. Horses seem so big and strong - but to those of us who own and love them, we know how fragile they really are. My vet once told me that it is better to put them down a little too soon than a little to late. Those words were true then, and stay with me today.

I wish your partner strength as he struggles with the emotions of the decision, and I wish all of you peace and freedom from pain.

I like the idea of saving some mane. My sister used to save some tail hairs of her horses and made tiny "pony tails" that she hung up with her ribbons.

I am so sorry for the three of you. The hardest part about having animals in our lives is when it is time to say goodbye. I've had to go through it several times and it is always heart wrenching. Please take comfort in knowing that you and your Partner gave Laddie a good life filled with love, That is all any of us, animal or human can hope for.

Aww thats so sad i really feel for you, my heart sank when i read your thread. I would just like to say I dont know you personally but im sure im right when i say he had the best life with you and your partner and you would have given him the best possible life experiences!!
