RIP Laddie----Very sad-----Going to have to put a horse down

Just remember TOUCH is very important to animal recovery. It has been documented that animals that are recovering that do not get human touch do not improve much, those that do have human contact and love and touch, DO show signs of improvement. Sometimes it is not enough but you are doing all you can. Bute is an awesome drug for these instances. Just keep telling him how much he means to you and to hang on as long as he can and to let you know when it is his time to leave us, you will know!

Oil for colic not founder.

Founder is a hoof issue not a stomach issue.
Not to be rude but be careful giving advice like this. Too much oil for a horse that has foundered can cause a flare up.

Hoof trimming. pads, diet change a variety of things are neede in the case of founder.

The coffin bone rotates inside the hoof capsul and will eventually poke throught he soul of the hoof in untreated.

Here is a link that shows a pic

Here is one with some good explanation for the layman

I hope your horse gets better. Its very hard to lose them. Good luck and God Bless

What is laminitis and founder?
Equine laminitis is a vascular disease associated with areas of ischemia or hemostasis within the laminae. The laminae secure the coffin bone/distal phalanx to the hoof wall. Inflammation associated with delamination interferes with the wall/bone bond. In advanced laminitis, the coffin bone becomes detached from the horny wall and may rotate or sink. In lay terms, this is known as “founder,” from the maritime term meaning to sink.

Thanks for pointing it out to me.. Its been more then 12 years since I have worked with horses and I guess some things got jumbled in my head.. No ill will or bad advice was done intentionally..

I'm so sorry you are losing a beloved pet. After reading some more, I hope he pulls through!

I wish you the best with it. My old mare has gone through a mild founder a couple of years in the spring. Since we moved south, she stopped getting it. She was diagnosed with a mass in the middle of last year, as she just couldn't keep weight on, even with feeding her 8 pounds of grain a day(ALOT for a little 14.2 easy keeper). The vet told me to feed her as much as she wanted and to call "when it was time", which ended up being 12 pounds a day. The vet expected that we would need to do the deed by August or before winter. I spent may nights outside with her crying and just leaning against her, I've had her for 27 years. Due to poor planning, I had to go to a different feed store and found a different brand of food...more complete and costs less. This food had a miraculous effect, and she is back down to her 4 pounds a day in the middle of winter, she looks fabulous. As far as the mass goes, she seems fine, and will still gallop over for food when she's good and hungry. The long and short is that she isn't done yet, and I am leaving the decision to the time when she's ready to be done...I am so grateful for the "extra" time that I am getting with her. I hope that you get that with your boy!

That is wonderful news!!!
It is so great to hear good news! Has the vet recommended any corrective shoeing? If so, be sure to do it asap, to stop the rotation of the coffin bone.

If he is up and moving about, that is the best thing for him.

I'm so glad

Beautiful horse! Hope you and your partner will find a way to make him feel better! Not all is lost because horses CAN recover the founder but never be cured. Then the next time you really have to keep an eye out making sure he does not founder again which it would rotate his coffin bone even more. It is painful!

Keep us updated!

Just to give you hope- my 26 year old beloved, beloved gelding has foundered twice, and recovered both times- find yourself the best farrier possible to help work on trimming him correctly during the grow out period. It will make all the difference in the world! And watch fresh grass not only in the spring, but after any drought. That's what fooled me the second time! Best of luck to you!
