I am really torn, I love how easy it is to clean the glass top, but I thought I heard that you can't do any canning on them. I have no cast iron, so that's not an issue, but my main set is a very heavy stainless set.


It must be the rapture for my appliances by the way. The compressor on the AC went out yesterday and when we dug the fan out it didn't work. Really I wasn't surprised by that point.

The glass tops are expensive to fix, my mil has one and the element went out it was like $200 to fix rather than $15 for the coil ones. They are easier to clean but everyone I know that has one hates it at one point or another. I have also heard its hard to do canning and you can't, or aren't supposed to use cast iron on them. I will get a gas stove next as we already have the gas line ran. I can't believe someone ran the gas line for the stove and then bought a cheap electric stove

Btw I was also thinking you had a chicken named oven and just had to read because I was sure there was a funny story behind that name!

Stay away from the digital flat tops by frigedaire I've had nothing but problems with the one we had at our condo, and it would start screeching and have to be reset almost weekly. We only had it new after 2 years. The warranty didn't cover the issue and it was going to be $200 for the new part and to be put in. We were moving within 2 months of that, and we just decided to reset all the time rather then replace.

But our oven where we are now is about to go too... 15+ years old, so I like this thread for the positive stuff.

Besides... whats your budget like? Because if budget doesn't matter... GO BIG!!!!

We did investigate having propane just for cooking, but the companies around here demand a minimum or they won't supply gas! We'd never use that with only cooking.

I got a Whirlpool Gold a little over a year ago and I think it's fair to say I'm in LOVE! I bake alot and there is nothing this oven can't do. If you're shopping at Lowe's I definitely recommend doing some comparison shopping. They have a price match guarantee and I think I saved about $400 on the range alone because, at the time Best Buy had it on crazy sale. Good Luck!

I always buy the cheapest self cleaning oven available, usually a Fridgedaire at about $425. I've bought alot of them (rental properties) and I haven't had any problems with them.

I prefer the element top stoves personally. I like them alot better for canning. I had a glass top and it was a real pain with canning because it just wouldn't bring the temps high enough in my 22 quart canner. I also didn't think they were that easy to clean. I'll stick with my element tops.

We only needed to fill it 3 times over the winter and spent less then we do on propane for our grill in the summer. Look into purchasing your own tank and just filling it when needed. The tank only cost $120 up front and its ours to keep.
