RIR and Barred Rock -- now with pictures! (Was hens and spurs?)

Quote:
I hardly know anything about anything! I got the chickens as day-olds with my father, who unfortunately had a stroke and just passed away. So now I have 7 chickens of unknown gender and I'm kinda making it up as I go.

I am hoping that I have all hens or, at most, one roo!

Do they look healthy to you guys? *worries*

I'm going to try to get a better picture of that one. The hawk was hanging out in the trees and that was making all of them edgier than normal -- I'm just thankful they have the good sense to scurry toward cover at the sound of the hawk, even though they don't range far to begin with! They WERE in a covered pen, but they decided that it'd be an awesome idea to pull down the hawk mesh from inside and after the third day of untangling upset chickens from hawk mesh, I just tossed 'em out the door. :p

No new pics -- Just a question!

If I don't have crowing yet and no one is acting really rooster-ish and I'm not seeing large spurs (ETA: they all have little spurs but since I've been eating eggs from them for a couple weeks now, there are obviously hens out there with spurs!), is it a safe guess at this point that I ended up with all girls?

I got them late April -- they're just over 5-months old now and I'm getting on average 5 eggs/day, so I suspect all hens.

Looking at the pictures, at that age I am 99.9% sure they are all hens. The RIR's are for sure hens, and the BR's that I can see look like hens also.

I don't know if this helps, but I have 5 Barred Rocks that are now 7 weeks old. I am pretty sure I've got 2 boys and 3 girls.

Here's the (alleged) boy:

And here's the girl:

Overall, the girls are a tad darker than the boys, but frankly to this newbie the only thing that's obvious is their heads, ha ha!
