RIR Breed Thread

Hatchery for sure. The good ones are not easy to find.

Like greathorse said, Murry Mc Murray has the typical hatchery style R.I. Reds..
If you want "real" Red's you are going to get them from a breeder.. The only place I would recomend other than a breeder that you might want to try is
Shady Lane Poultry ( http://www.shadylanepoultry.com/ ).
I don't know what his Red's are like now but about 4 -5 years ago he had decent Red's not great but something to start off with..

I got my first chickens a year ago from a friend who sells eggs. He gets rid of his birds as they get to be three years old as they don't lay well then. I told him about the "HATCHERY" birds quitting at an early age as I have read on these pages. He gets his chicks from Mcmurray. Thanks for the reply.

Is there an easy way to sex the RIR chicks? So far, all my chicks look reddish, but one has more of a chipmunk coloration. It is also a little bigger, and I wondered if perhaps it is a male.

I have had RIR chicks in the past, but I got them from a hatchery, and I always got pullets, so they all looked pretty much the same.

You will need to be much better than me to tell the difference. I cant tell until I begin to see some sickle feathers about six months or so, until then they all look the same to me.

I wanted to post pictures of my new babies. The lighter chicks are buckeyes.I have 5 buckeyes 4 olive eggers and 5 rosecomb RIR's from Dick Hortsman. You will have to figure out which is which.I also have straight combed rir chicks coming soon from Pinegrove here on BYC that I'm excited about getting.

Ok I have sort of a silly question, I think.

I have these little RIR babies from Taterschickens. I did not get a great hatch, but I am sure it was because of the power outage. Those were nice fertile eggs. And I do have a nice start to my little flock of heritage RIR's.

Now I want some more.

The chicks that did hatch were very quick about it, and nice vigorous chicks.

Ok, here is my silly question. Has anyone noticed that their RIR babies were chirpier than other chicks? I do not mean that they are peeping loudly as if they are in distress. I mean they seem to make all kinds of happy trills and twitters and chirps. They don't just go peep peep peep.

I have had lots of other chicks before so I am not new to chicks and I don't remember any of them being this musical.

Catherine

I havent noticed the noise as much as the Heritage RIR that I have hatched just seem more active and busy than any others I have messed with. You must also have some nice hardy ones to start with.

Catherine,
I think you have defective chicks ......

SO, what you need to do is >>>> pack them up, and send them to me!
I will take care of their problem. Only I can do this; you can't. It's a secret kinda cure all thing ..... been in my family for generations.

Got it? I will PM you my address!
