RIR Breed Thread

They look nice but, the two things I see off hand that you will have to work on is the feathers right before the tail there relay frayed, both the rooster and the hen have it but the hen shows it the most.
It my be condition but I think it also has a lot to do with Genetics and some of the feed (to much protein and not enough fat/ oil in there feed).
The other thing I see that need work is tail angle both look very flat. The tail of a Red should be Males 20° and Females 10°.
Also watch the Wings they should be held parallel with the back .
Other than that there not bad.

This is what you are working too.

Chris

thanks,Chris

got some four month olds from this pen.we will see how the feathers look.they get boss and game bird food along with the grower.any other ideas?the hen and rooster pictured are from the same line(with the ropey feathers) but the babies have a different line bred in so we will see if it gets better.

still working on the angles but ,all in all, very happy with my start.i am looking foward to improving them.

the rooster is such a gentleman with his girls and nice to me so i am definately not getting rid of that trait even if he has low wing carraige.maybe he will have a son that comes along with better wings AND his personality but temperament is high up there with me.

Nobody's posted here for a while,

hope somebody's reading this. I bought hatching eggs this past January 2011 that were supposed to be show quality, but they sure don't match up to some of the ones posted here

Not nearly as dark, and I'm not happy at all with their leg color, which is only a pale yellow. Plus, although I haven't weighed them yet, they do not look as robust as they should for being 10 months old. Plus, take a look at this pic, two of the pullets have the most amazingly not SQ lacing on their breasts:

And here next to one of the more normal ones:

Here are pics of the cockerels, sorry not the best pics:

What do you make of that lacing? The breeder said never seen it in any of theirs, and that "maybe one of the hens got into the Ameraucana pen". I have no idea if that cross could produce birds looking like that. What do you think of the cockerels? I moved the 2 laced girls over to an egg laying only pen and have some eggs from the others in the incubator--but I'd like to get some better SQ RIR, prefer hatching eggs, would be great if someone were close by, I'm in southern Arizona. Darn, I hate this starting over stuff

I want to stay with large-sized fowl and prefer the single comb. Read that taterschickens got out of RIRs, too bad, hers sounded nice.

These are from two different breeders. As you will notice the pullet is a hybrid/prodution type bird, and the cockeral is from Mr.Rameys line in S.C, even though the hybrid was sold to me as eggs from a heritage rir. You also have hybrid/production birds. This is the main problem I have with people who sell heritage eggs when they are no more than production. Some don't know the difference, and I suppect some do. There are many differences in a true rir and a production. The colour of a true rir is not rust and they are bigger than the hybrid breed. I have found that 99% of people who think they have pure rir's really have hybrids, and don't want anyone telling them different. This is why this breed is one of the rarest breeds out there. I will add that heritage barred rocks are very similar in rarity, with 99% of people having hatchery stock, and most not knowing the difference. Check out the thread on heritage breeds, and you will find some very good information on the standards. I finally have someone who is going to sell me chicks from one of the oldest lines I know of. If anyones interested I can give you his contact. I would love to see the heritage breeds compete with hatchery stock.

Thank you for replying. I've gotten the straight scoop on my birds now and am on page 50 out of 437 of the heritage large fowl thread
