First let me tell you. When I got this message from this little lady in Iowa two months ago from this board I cried. They are living like the people did during the great depresison. They have nothing. She is trying to sell eggs to make money to feed the family and work on the side . So its my duty as a breeder not to get her what she wanted Mohawk LINE BREED Rhode Island Red large fowl like I use to raise but to get her egg laying machines so we can make the most profit per bird per square feet that she can.
I choose four Hatcheies to get her started. If I find a line of egg laying strain better than what I choose for her we will go with these folks. Four hundred production reds that can pump out a egg a day.
The M hatchery was not in my list. The do good work but I need chicks like the commercial guys have. I have a fellow down the road that I am going to contact who has 5.000 egg layers. I think 1,000 are brown egg layers. I am going to find out where he gets his chicks. Heck they maybe some of these yellow goofy chickens called golden layers for the matter.
I was at books a million taking a break and looking at cigar magazines and fishing magazines. Making cigars like they did in Cuba today is a art and a science. When these old farmers left cuba they had tobaco seeds in their belts that they brought from Cuba to Houndurous and the other Latin countrys. These where the heritage seeds they used to make their famous cigars in cuba . Castro would not let them take anything from Cuba to these new countries or he would kill them. Thier tobaco fields today are as good as the ones in Cuba. Thier seeds are the old fashion seeds that their fathers and grand fathers used in the early days. We do the same with old breeds of Poultry. We dont have many people who have these old lines that go back to the 1920s and 1940s. We must plow on people and not us take our eyes off our goals. You can not line breed production reds as all you are going get is more of the same. If God would give me 30 more years to breed I could not take those egg laying red chickens nor the new hampsires out there and get them back to they once was.
Who was Kenneth Bowles From New York. If you think you know the history of New Hampshires you can not know who this man was. He was the one who left the Rhode Island Red world and took his skills and made the New Hampshires what they where. Art Schilling took pictures of his birds and had made cuts of them. We have seen them in Poutlry Press over they years and I am sure Jamie Parker Mr. Modern New Hampsire man has some of those cuts. He sold 30,000 to 50,000 chicks a year to people all over the coutnry in the glory days. He put the Rhode Island Red Club and the popularity of the breed down the toilet. He invented the New Hampshire Bantam. He shared these birds with others and got them into the standard. When this breed slowed down and Hatchery bussiness failed he got out and just had New Hampshire bantams and R I Red Bantams. They where not like the commerical reds style they looked like miniture old fashion large Reds his old Dick line that he had back in the days of Madison Square garden. He is the person who thaught me how to take large fowl Standard Breed Reds and made them into bantams.
When I started this project 22 years ago I wanted to take a Old Fashion Rhode Island Red and convert them to a bantam. I had no desire to go to a hatchery and take thier egg laying machines and make a bantam out of them. I would be the laughing stock of the Poutlry World.
If you wish to breed your production red chickens year in and year out go do it. What hurts the feeling of the 1% and guys such as Ken Bowles is trying to put them in the same box of chickens and the old style birds. They are not what you think they are.
There is no breed called Production or Commerical Reds. They are the same kind of birds such as the crosses that hatchreies have put togeather. Same with New Hampshire Reds. No such breed never was never will. Its part of marketing by the hatcheries and back yard hobiest buy into it.
These birds are breed for a purpose and our old fashion Rhode Island Reds are breed as a DUAL purpose breed. Just like the Short Horn Cattle. They give some milk and much meat. They are not like a Jersey or a Gurnsey Cow.
A lession that we must learn is from one of my mentors Maurice Wallace of Canada. Dont encrouch into the other breed when you are breeding or judging. Do not make the Rhode Island Red bantam have a back like a Plymouth Rock or a New Hampshire. This is a cull and they are suppose to have flat top lines with a little lift in the tail if possable. We have the same problem with breeders who have so called pedegree birds. They wont listen or read the standard. They do it the way they want to do it and that is why some of our old breeds are going down hill to hatchery level.
Disagree if you wish. I think in this tread you may get one vote out of ten for your cause for your M. chickens. There is nothing wrong with them but they better pump out a lot of eggs if you want to make a profit selling brown eggs to make a buck.
