I have RIWs, a true RIW has a rose come and a body shape much more like RIR with fluffy tails (my son calls them poodles). I am told there are some single comb RIW crosses out there but have never seen one.
I've heard that true RIWs only have rose combs, but I've also heard they could have both? Or if they do have a single comb it was false advertisement basically lol

You can only show Rhode Island Whites with rose combs as that is the breed standard. But single comb birds pop up now and then from rose comb RIW parents and can be used in breeding but not for showing.

Production strains of Rhode Island Whites that you'll find in most hatcheries usually have single combs. Whether they're crosses or the hatcheries just prefer to keep single combed birds I don't know but these birds are way different from purebreds in many other ways. Basically the hatcheries call them Rhode Island Whites as a selling point given that Rhode Island Reds are such excellent layers. These birds are the white version of production reds.
