rogue rooster trying to kill me.

Roosters are not worth anything. No one wants them except for the pot because of the aggression issues. If you want a rooster, select the nicest one you have and kill the rest. Roosters kept in a bunch are stressed and not happy because they will start fighting each other. Out of every 10 roosters I hatch out, I get maybe one nice one that gets rehomed. The others are killed and fed to the local fox family. I will not rehome a roo that is attacking people or pets.
If 1 out of 10 roosters you hatch are good and the rest are mean maybe you should rethink the roosters you breed?

:lau:gig:lau:gig, where can I buy one of those or find the blue prints to build one? while my roo that was attacking now resides in the freezer. I could put cactus in it.. would probably work better than a evil roo.

If you're not too handy call this guy.
He comes highly recommended and is said to be a genius.

Exactly how old are these chickens? They sound like cockerels just coming into their maturity... they are mostly hormonal nightmares. I processed 4 of my boys, and have several others on a list of joining them in freezer camp soon. I was shocked to see in cleaning them that their testicals are larger than their hearts. Literally. Testosterone poisoning at work.

They are geared for species survival in an unmanaged environment, not as domestic “pets”. You need to get the extra boys far away from your hens now, before they kill them in their enthusiasm to mate. Cull for dinner or dog food (humanely and fully process them don’t just give your dogs the carcass), sell, give away... but get rid of them. Tony sounds like he should be top of the list... I understand attachment, but you NEED To get past that if you’re going to keep chickens, or only buy pullets at point of lay or sexed chicks.

If you care at all about your animals you need to address your situation. (Nothing against vegetarians here... don’t get me wrong I respect the decision) But people with “morality (animal welfare) based” vegetarian ideals should not breed or buy straight run chickens. In nature the “boy problem” would sort itself out with predation, in an artificial environment we have to serve that role, it is unfair to the chickens to put them through this.

A lot of very good advice has been given here. The OP cannot humanely keep 10 or 11 roosters penned up with 10 or 11 hens.

The only real question is whether the OP wants to be a responsible chicken owner or not.
I'll agree that 9 out of 10 need to go whether to a new home, rescue or freezer.. that is far to many roo's in with hens, I'll end up with 22 hens when everyone is grown, currently have 3 roo's, one or two of those will be moving on to new homes or freezers. what's the normal count they suggest? 12 to 14 hen's per Roo to keep the hens from being overly mated? I'm going to have to look at hen saddles for mine, I have only one Roo at the moment who's in with the hens and still having troubles with over mating. My other two are in the brooder and in a grow out cage.

Think of it this way, you want want your 10 daughters (hens) to be with 10 abusive husbands (roosters). You want your daughters to be with 1 rooster who will take care of them and treat them like a princess. You are abusing your hens by keeping so many roosters. If you insist on keeping roosters, they each need their own pen to be contained.

The irony of someone who has moral issues with culling excess roosters buying pullets or buying eggs from a grocery store is that they are, by default, participating in the slaughter of day old cockerels.

Agree completely! But many don’t see that aspect... A Decade of working at a large health food grocery chain was very enlightening to me in respect to the motives and misconceptions surrounding meat, eggs, dairy, nuts, soy meat substitutes, and animal welfare.

And the irony of someone with 11 carnivorous pets (dogs) who may also be a meat eater, but is likewise unwilling to cull or have culled excess cockerels who are actively harming other animals (over mating the hens, attacking other animals, etc) is not lost on me either!

Sorry got to be Tony's voice.
Lady chase Tony.....Tony KILL!
Yep, you started it. :)
My other chickens are okay..the roosters don't chase me ever. When they chase the hens in my presence I chase them for about five minutes...I doubt they understand I am trying to make them feel like the hens do. Some have taken to perching up and away from them during the day and night. I would never eat my rooster. Does that same theory work on eating my chihuhahua when one pees on the floor..should I eat one to show the others not to pee? I dont have children (I wasnt able) so they are my babies and I love them all so much. I also havent eaten meat in 30 years so Im pretty sure Im not going to start now. Peace..Love...Hug your chickens.
