....get him by his feet and hold him upside down? They usually just hang there if they are upside down. Once he is hanging and calm then maybe you can have someone else grab hold so his wings are kept to his side and hold him upright.

Try wrapping him in a towel or stuff him in something similar to a sock, pant leg etc. keep him from flapping wings and his feet tucked in while you work on the damaged area.
