Roo culling went bad!

OK, I'll explain. I did think you could see what she said but I guess not. The OP said her husband, an avid hunter shot the rooster 4 times with a pellet gun and it ran off. Now you know as well as I a .22 caliber round and a shot from pellet gun are not the same in ballistic results. I would think a .22 would kill a rooster quit well. So you in the country and me in the country is still the same. Before anyone shoots anything with any caliber round, know what it will do before the fact. Is it lethal or not? Come on, you know better.

If shooting a dog with a paintball is animal cruelty, then shooting a rooster 4 times with a pellet gun and watching it run off is certainly.

Sorry!! I didn't read it all. Yes, your right you need the right gun to do the deed. I shot my roo in the head & he didn't suffer one bit. Like I said I'm by myself so it was the easiest way for me. But if you have someone to help with the deed there's definately better ways again I'm sorry.

I've never used a pellet gun or a 22..lol But I would guess that a pellet gun isn't the best way. I wish I had a neighbor that was country and would shoot the chickens in the head for me but I'm here in the city so when your hens get to older you have to rehome them and hope the right person gets them

My husband could do it if he had to but unfortunately my step father traumatized me with all his killing of our farm animals when I was a kid.

Our roo has turned vocious so we're looking for options. His name is Marylou.

I'm in Monroe WA...close to a few of you.

I have done it with shooting but I had the bird in hand and put the gun just behind the head. If you do this I think it is quite humane, but I don't do that anymore just because I've realized its kind of unnecessary and potentially more dangerous for you (ricochet could happen even with a pellet). Once the bird is in hand I just hold the feet in the air so that the head is on the ground, place a broomstick (or whatever similar object) on the neck just behind the head. Then I step on both sides of the stick holding it firmly in place and pull the feet up at the same time.

Bleeding out in a killing cone is also (counterintuitively in my opinion because it sounds like torture) rated very humane by the AVMA. The reason for this is because the chicken bleeds out faster while the heart is beating. I've read that beheading is considered to be less humane because the brain holds nourishing blood longer without the benefit of the heart pumping it out- but this is a matter of tiny degrees really. I tend to think that any of the usual methods of slaughter are pretty good, the main thing I strive for with meat birds is to concentrate on a good life more than to fixate on the difference of a few seconds of pain in the death.

Hope you don't let one bad experience keep you from continuing to raise your food! We learn as we go.

Yay! I have 12 11 girls. Four 4yr olds, Road Island Red Elmo, Americana Black Beard, 2Barred Rocks Lovey and Pecky Peckerton. Four 1yr olds 2 Buff Orpingtons The Juds, One Black Ausralorp Ebony, and a Silver Laced Wyandotte Lacey. Then the newset girls are 2yrs, two more Silver Laced Wyandottes (not yet named) and another Road Island Red that has such a tall comb that it falls to one side over her eye and reminds me of the late great Elvis, sooo I named her Elviseena LOL.

Now I am looking for more many more Buff Orpingtons, wanting some Coper Marans, and White Leghorns!

What about you?

Cool! Really close to me!! What kind of hens do you have?

Don't ever give away an attacking rooster. Or at least tell the person. Only food for food either by you or the person who get the rooster.

My first attempt at killing a rooster didn't go well, either

, poor fella. Since then I have learned to use a killing cone and find it so much easier and quicker than any other method. A quick slice to the jugular vein and then just wait for them to bleed out enough to fade away. I try to keep them as calm as possible

talking softly to them as they hang there.
