HELP! My rooster is clearly not well. Went out to give them some turnips and noticed him in the corner. He is standing up but his eyes are closed and he has some mucus type gunk all over his beak. He has been a little lathargic last few days. I touch him and he puts his head up but wont open eyes, then his head lazes back down. I've only had chickens for about 2 1/2 months so have NO idea what I'm doing.

I'm not sure how to treat him. I've isolated him and made sure he has food and water available but he is really sleepy and just wants to sleep. Do I need to force some water into him? I don't want to take hom to a vet so if I can I'd like to help him myself. As far as I can tell the mucus (sp?) coming out of his nose/beak does not smell bad (not that I could smell it cuz all I can smell around our farm is skunk!) and there isnt very much. I brought him out of the coop and set him down, he tried to walk and was very wobbly and off balance. Poor guy!

I would definitely get him isolated from the others and start him on an antibiotic....just put it in his water....Hope he gets better and everyone else stays well!

You should get ahold of some Tylan or Baytril and treat him for respiratory infection. You can get a dropper and some water with a splash of gatorade and then just drip it slowly on top of his beak. He'll have to swallow because it tends to drain down to the inside of the beak. You can clean off his nostrils and beak with a q-tip. He'd probably best respond to injectable antibiotics if you can get them. You could try adding a quarter of a plain aspirin to the water and gatorade mixture.

AND HURRY. URGENT.

(And yes, he does need to stay hydrated - just be very careful getting water into him, so he doesn't choke. He may be bolstered by 3 drops Polyvisol liquid children's vitamin daily, administered via dropper gently along his beak line so he swallows on his own and doesn't choke - this is NOT a cure - it's just to try to give him some basic nutrients)
