Roo or pullet?

Golden Comet is a sex link, and white rocks are often used in that mix, yes? Could a hatchery-quality white rock carry the barred gene? If the hen had recessive barring (and is able to pass that on) and the rooster had recessive barring, a barred chick could result.

Anyway. I've had pullets that "act" like roos, I have a slow feathering pullet that still isn't fully feathered at 14 weeks and is very very likely a girl (of course no eggs = no 100%)... and most of all:

Sex linked birds cannot produce sex linked offspring so this is NOT A BLACK SEX LINK MALE as would be indicated by the spot. If this is a barred bird, a well defined head spot, dark black down and a relatively dark leg splash indicate female, at least in barred rocks. I assume this is a coloring trait and not specific to the breed. Somebody's got to rule the roost, and the alpha female will often have more advanced development (including comb) "act" like a roo. Mine from this year was domineering at day one.

Now, my genetics professor in undergrad told me to drop the class, walk away and never look back, so I could be wrong and would love to hear educated arguments against this,

BUT...

Cute little girl.

If you are having problems with getting only cockerels from your incubator, you should examine everything that happens up until the hatch.

1. Are your hens overweight? If a hen is very well fed, the chemistry of her oviduct can tend to favor male sperm rather than female.
2. Your rooster might produce a lot more male sperm than female.
3. Certain incubation conditions can favor more male eggs to hatch than female or vice-versa. (I can't remember what those conditions are right now, but I know that it can happen).

The most likely explanation (if you only have one Cock) is that his sperm is predominantly male.

Looking at the Original photo, I have not read through, But I'm 98% sure you have a pullet there, the feathering is too advanced and far along to be a cockeral, pullets mature faster. The comb, should be twice that high, with no tail.
hope this helps.

Here are some updated pics i took a few mins ago there exactly 20 days old right now. Figure id throw some pics of the other 5 in might aswell see if i can get some thoughts on there sex aswell as the black one since we are doing this.

I dont know if id go much on the stance they all tend to stiffen up after a few pics they dont like the flash much.

I don't go by that either -- I've had many of my hens stand in a so-called "roo-ish" stance, and like you said, they don't care for the flash very much.

So 20 days.. they're about 3 weeks... At this point I think you'd be able to see pink/red coming into the combs, so I'm guessing the one in question is probably a pullet. The only one in those pictures that I'd say is a cockerel is that one on the far left in the third picture. It looks like it's got quite a bit of pink in the comb.

He looks like a barred boy to me the white spot on his head is similar to my sex link chicks I had with my barred rock hen an
RIR Roo.
