Roof Slant and Overhang Question - Pics now on 2nd page!!!

Great advice from Pat, as usual. I really don't have enough overhang and one section of the floor gets wet in blowing rain -- but in this climate it really isn't a problem, it's just a walking area for them and they can easily get away from both wind and rain if desired. If it really gets damp I sling a little pelletized lime around for odor and to prevent yucky stuff like mold from growing in the litter.

Since we are in the same climate area, I would agree that you don't need (or want) shingle roofing unless you have a really steep drop. My run is six feet wide,
and I will be using tin roofing over particle board. There will be an 8" drop with about a 9" overhang on each end. Too much drop and one of our good ole
southern summer afternoon thunderstorms will turn it into a kite. Also we don't need to worry about shedding much (if any) snow. IMHO, the less drop the
better, as long as the water runs off.

Thanks for all the great help! We are not planning on a shingled roof. Gosh to describe our design....I wish my scanner worked and I'd just scan in my drawing but alas it isn't working right now. So, anyhoo I'll try to describe it. The side facing north will be a solid wood wall, the side facing east will have two foot wood on the bottom with 2x4 welded wire the rest of the way up, the side facing south will either be open completely to the run or have two foot of wood with wire on the top and a pop door, and the west side will have 8 feet of solid wood with a people door then the other 4 feet of the wall will be 2 foot of wood on the bottom and wire the rest of the way up. So yes, it will be a very open air coop since in Alabama the heat is the enemy, not the cold. On the inside of the people side of the door there is a 4'x8' storage area but the rest of the inside is coop. There's more that I can describe but I'm at work right now and have to go finish a case so I gotta go. I'll post again after my case.

I've been home for a while now and still can't get my scanner to work.

It would make much better sense if you could see the drawing. We will have power and water in the coop so thanks, Countrychix, for mentioning the height regarding hanging a light. Maybe I can get my scanner working tomorrow....I'm crossing my fingers.

Maybe I missed something, but I noticed several have answered as if the OP lives in the South, but I haven't seen her mention any location at all.

Anyway, mine is 8 X 12, 8 ft in the front and 6 ft in the rear, and it's NOT steep ar all

Well never could get my scanner working so I just took pics with my camera and uploaded them. This is my first time ever designing a coop and having chickens so please everyone feel free to toss in their thoughts or advice on anything that is good or needs modifying. Remember I'm in Central/East Alabama with high summer heat and high humidity so ventilation is my main idea. When winter comes around I can always put plastic on more walls if it ever gets too cold. These plans are drawn on paper where one square equals one foot.

The first picture is my floor plan. On the left side of the floor plan will be where I place my brooder for my chicks, then when they are out of the brooder, I will put nesting boxes and roosts on that solid wall.

This is the wall facing the north and the one which on the inside will be the brooder and then nest boxes and roosts.

This is the wall facing east. It will have a pop door that will eventually lead into a second chicken run. The 4' solid wood wall will protect the roosts.

This is the wall facing south. It will have the chicken run coming off it. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to put 2x4 wire above the two foot wood wall or leave it open. Either way I will still have the pop door there so chickens can use it if they would rather not jump over the top of the wood.

This is the wall facing west. The 8' of this wall from the left will be solid wood with a people door in it that opens into a 4'x8' storage area. The remaining 4' of that wall will be two foot lower wood with 2x4 wire up from there. Again ventilation will be my chickens' best friend.

I do not plan on cooping my chickens at night so my chicken run will be made as securely as we can make it plus we'll use hot wire along the bottom and the top to deter dogs and other predators. We are planning on covering the top of the run with something, probably shade cloth. There will be another door to enter the chicken coop from the storage area and the inside wall of the storage area will have 4' wooden lower walls and 2x4 wire above that so the chickens can't get into the storage area. Gosh I hope all this makes sense. lol If not, please feel free to ask for clarification. Again, any thoughts on this design will be greatly appreciated.

Just bumping this to the top so people can see my coop design pictures on page 2. Let me know your thoughts on the coop design, good, bad, needs modifying, etc. Thanks!
