Hello! My name is Chris and I'm from New Jersey...I'm a college student and suburban homesteader, and I decided to keep chickens. I have recently finished my coop (which was possibly the most fun my friends and I have ever had doing a project) and aside from some landscaping, everything is in place for chickens. Here's where I need some help! I don't know if I should raise chicks or get chickens who are older and more mature? I will be off from college from May-August, so I could raise chicks but get no egg production (yet). I'd rather start with older chicks though, as I do not want to invest in a brooder and such which is required for baby chicks. Also, being from New Jersey, we get the best of both worlds when it comes to weather. I'm curious as to what people in the area grow. I've considered Rhode Island Reds, Orpingtons, or Ameraucanas (spelling?) to start my flock, but any advice or suggestions is appreciated. I came to this forum to learn and hopefully thats what happens! Thanks and I look forward to being a part of the community!
