Hello! My name is Chris and I'm from New Jersey...I'm a college student and suburban homesteader, and I decided to keep chickens. I have recently finished my coop (which was possibly the most fun my friends and I have ever had doing a project) and aside from some landscaping, everything is in place for chickens. Here's where I need some help! I don't know if I should raise chicks or get chickens who are older and more mature? I will be off from college from May-August, so I could raise chicks but get no egg production (yet). I'd rather start with older chicks though, as I do not want to invest in a brooder and such which is required for baby chicks. Also, being from New Jersey, we get the best of both worlds when it comes to weather. I'm curious as to what people in the area grow. I've considered Rhode Island Reds, Orpingtons, or Ameraucanas (spelling?) to start my flock, but any advice or suggestions is appreciated. I came to this forum to learn and hopefully thats what happens! Thanks and I look forward to being a part of the community!

Considering your circumstances (college student) I think starting with point of lay pullets would be a wise decision if you can find any. Will someone be caring for them when you head back to school?

Yes! I just researched pullets (after learning what the term was) and I definitely believe that the way to go. My town has an ordinance saying I can only own hens, so pullets would be perfect. And yes, my parents have risen to the occasion and they are going to help me out while I'm at school. They're both very good with animals and have warmed up to the idea of chickens as pets. Also, my school is only about an hour and a half from home, so I plan on making a few weekend stops to make sure all is well with the chickens and the coop.

Hello Kentucky!! Haven't been there in a while. What could you tell me about Buff Orpingtons? They sound like the idea bird for my coop. Also, I need some tips on raising chickens, so on and so forth, like care tips, free-ranging, egg-laying...any advice helps!
