Room temperatures and incubating question

the way you can make the bator turn the eggs without opening it is just put a sponge in bottom of bator and put water on it for the humidty, and take a brick and place it on out side under one side of bator and then when it comes time to turn move brick to other side, and place the eggs in card board carton with dime size hole in bottom of each egg hole

Joe all you have to do is prop one end of the incubator up with a book about 2 inches high. Every few hours take the book from one end and put it under the other end of the incubater. It works really well with the homemade incubators. Don't drop the bator do it slowly and do it a uneven amount of times. say three or five times a day. I made me a small chart to keep up with the temps and humidity and with the times I turned them. I can email you one of my charts if you want one. It really helps me. Thanks for that idea for turning. Much simpler than the PVC one I've been creating in my mind...

I can't wait to get this started! Hopefully before long I'll be able to put in a bunch of my mutt eggs and get busy...

Well I'm new at the incubator game and for the first few nights I was up and down every few hours checking on the temp and humidity.... felt like I had a new baby again... and I guess I do, but I hope that it's LOTS of new babies with 41 eggs in there!

I've got my bator in the best spot I think I can find other than a closet!

I've found that if I put a towel underneath the bator and one over the top window of my 1588, I can keep the temp more stable. If I walk by and the temp reads 100.1, then I remove a part of the towel over a corner of the "window" and allow a little of the warmth to escape there. It will then usually go right back to 99.5 or 99.7. If I walk by and it's gone down to 99.3, I make certain that it's fully covered. I add "warm" water if the humidity goes below 40. Sometimes I add a little too much, if I do I open the bator for a few seconds if I notice that the humidity gets up near 49% and that will usually run it down to 44 or 45 and then it goes down slowly until it goes to below 40 and I'm careful not to add quite as much the next time.

Just giving my experience so far.

Yep, but it will be a few days before I have an update. Still working on plans for building something that will work in my cold house. I'm sure I'll be updating everyone constantly, as well as asking all kinds of questions while I'm getting started...

Mahonri, thanks for the advice about the towel. I'll give that a try if/when I need to in the next couple of weeks.

PS to Mahonri- vivi en Ecuador para dos anos tambien. (I lived in Ecuador for two years also)

I would think that with a homemade incubator you would want to have several thermos, and a good hygrometer. I would really like to hear/see what it turns out to be and how it works for you, jossanne.
