Roos vs. Neighbors-Need Advice

P.S. - I figure the barking dogs are the reason my chickens have been safe from predators - so another added benefit!

I LOVE IT, Sjisty! H-A-R-M-O-N-Y!!

It never ceases to amaze me when people move out into rural country areas and get mad at THINGS EXPECTED IN THE COUNTRY.

I can understand someone getting upset in a residential area where roosters are not allowed, but in a rural environment, one has to expect things like that and if they do not want it, they should not live there.

I would not worry about your roosters at all. Tell Mr. Annoyed Neighbor if he keeps bugging you, you will get a PEACOCK. See how he likes hearing THAT.

We have a saying in our area "kill'em with kindness!" If he approaches you again tell him you know the zoning and that you are allowed to have the roosters. Your sorry that he feels the crowing is obtrusive but that they are on your property and you use them for farming purposes and kindly dismiss him. You might also nicely inform him that you are putting up no tresspassing signs and you would appreciate that he abide by them. I too have neighbors that are obnoxious, the ones that are threating know that I wont hesitate to use what means are necessary to keep my property and family safe, they ones that are just annoyances, well I dont let them get my blood pressure up, its not worth it. Try to stay the better person that way if he does get nasty and law enforcement/code enforcement has to get involved you are the good guy.I wish you luck with the neighbor.

This is absolutely I-swear-to-God true: when we moved into our rural subdivision, the lady across the street (also in this new subdivision) kept calling the cops to complain about the cows mooing too loud!!!

She was a real "character" alright! I bet the police just LOVED her. Moved back to Dunwoody some years ago.
I am reading this with great interest; both sides have merit and I'm trying to find real answers that'll work for me. I think I like the idea, if ever a problem, of taking the offending critters in hand to the offendee and asking which do I kill? I am looking for ways to NOT get all confrontational with folks about stuff yet not knuckle under. Just now I have 5 hens, no roosters, in a moving tractor. No fence. Trying to make it work; its a pretty laid back neighborhood.

I also just remembered my donkey has a bray that can be heard for MILES. Yet another animal you can get to make him forget about your "loud rooster".

Well, we did end up rehoming our loudest roo. He's a beautiful bird, and I had a friend who was interested in breeding him. He makes amazing babies!! I also did it because dh was getting annoyed by the noise. Plus if I got rid of Bubba, I got to get goats

(cue evil laugh). I guess if my neighbors didn't like my roo, they'll love my goats

. They're snowbirds and will be gone for the season soon.

Well, if you had to get rid of a roo then I'm glad you did it for dh and not for the neighbor. But if the neighbor complains again, you can inform him of this, and tell him that while you did get rid of the loudest roo, he should be placated by that and leave you alone.

There aren't really any hard and fast lines about what people should be expected to put up with-- this thread certainly shows that! But we're forced to make determinations anyway. Your neighbor should consider how much worse it could be and be happy. The neighbor behind us likes to rev his motorcycle, the neighbor next door has two very loud dogs, and the neighbor on the other side has kids who like to scream a lot while they're playing. I'd prefer not to have these noises, but I will gladly put up with them so long as nobody complains about my chickens!

Well if you get goats you can have a buck strategically placed to carry his oh so lovely scent to your neighbor... (evil laugh)

Glad things worked out with your rooster!
