Roost design

Most of the time the birds fly up and down from their roosts, though some breeds and/or individual birds are poor flyers and need a ramp. I do have a ramp in my coop that gives them access to both one end of the roost and to the nests since I had a Brahma who flew like a concrete block.

Yes, this information would indeed help.

And the number of chickens in question.

If you have it on another thread, I have trouble remembering these details from one thread to another. :)
7x10 and I have 13 birds ordered....12 hens 1 rooster, I live in the middle of nowhere so he can make as much noise as he wants :)

That's a good amount of space per bird. Can we get some pics of your coop? I think it's great that you're covering all the bases before you get your flock, just want to check out your ventilation because this has me curious.
since I have a window on one side
I also prefer an L or U shape for easy access to my flock

I'll get some taken shortly...I have to get all my tools out of it!! LOL I been keeping my saws and things in there to keep them available when I have some time to work on it. My Omlet door is supposed to be here today of tomorrow according to tracking and I have some 48" hardware cloth arriving anytime to fortify the roof inside and the walls then the inside walls will commence. and hopefully be completed in the next week or so. My run is going to be a 10x20 chain link dog pen that I picked up from the marketplace and it will be fortified with hardware cloth as well.

That sounds nice and roomy, with plenty of space for you to walk in.

Are the nests on the long wall or the short wall? Inside or out?

You'll want about 13 feet of roost for the flock -- though sometimes they'll crush up tight against each other and sometimes they'll spread out.

More roost space needed, IMO. The birds need space to get up and down, one foot per bird is way too tight. Double the length, at least!
Two roosts at the end would work, or doing an L would be very good, so you would have 17' of roost space, better.
Our roosts are set so they lift out of the way for shoveling out the bedding. Make it easy for you to manage!
We have a ladder roost in one section of our coop, for youngsters to learn how to get up on the roosts. Higher has more prestige for top ranking birds, so they are motivated to get on the higher roosts. We don't have Silkies, or birds too massive to fly, so no ramp here. Some of our birds roost in the rafters, eight feet up!

Victoria and Maria Theresa agree on the desirability of height. Even in that bitter cold snap when Victoria decided to sleep on the juvenile roost below, Maria Theresa chose only to move a yard or so away from the wall.

Pictures of future coop...(I didn't get my tools out) :)First pic is the front, my walk in door will be the middle hole, chicken door on the end. The L side that is closed in( West side) is where I am planning to put the roost (last pic) Back wall has the window the entire length that is covered on the outside with horse panel wire and inside hardware cloth...same as the East side window. My plan is to put the nesting boxes on the E side wall under that window (pic 2). coop 4.jpg coop 1.jpg coop 3.jpg coop 5.jpg coop 2.jpg
