I work in a local area hospital and I was talking with a patient of mine about chickens and he said he had a rooster that attacked him about once a month. He told me when he was out working in the pasture he would keep an old wicker broom handy and when his rooster would come at him he would get the broom and give him a couple of whacks and the rooster would beat a hasty retreat and they would be good for a few weeks. I would imagine he is just doing his job and protecting his ladies, even though and in spite of the fact you are there to feed and clean and protect them too. He is only an animal and not able to reason logically.
This isn't offering any suggestions that can help you, but maybe you can watch his actions and find out if there is a pattern. Good luck! I have seen the horns on some roosters! I am happy NOT to be a hen!
