A roosters spurs can be dulled in two ways. By putting a cover on them, and by filing them with a Dremel or a small metal file.
So you're actually filing the nail? Not the skin/ bone right.
I did see in a book I purchased that if you warm a potato in the microwave then stick the spur into it. You let it sit for a couple of minutes then twist, that it takes the spur off. But I don't think that everything you read in books is all that easy.

Tell me this, do you think it's painful when you break a bone? Rooster spurs directly connect into their bone, should know, I personally looked into that with a rooster we had go to freezer camp, specifically because I wanted to be sure that I would not be causing harm using that method. To break it is painful (in my opinion). In my opinion that isn't a good way to do it. While filing it down is painless, and you only need to do it enough to dull the spur.. They might be afraid of it the first few moments but they tend to settle after a moment if you have a friend holding him.

I would also think that it was painful. I couldn't even imagine. I don't know where some people get these ideas and then put it in books like this is a good idea.

I feed All Flock, & Flock Raiser. Oyster Shells on the side for the ladies.

Treats the birds get occasionally is corn, scratch, or mealworms. Never fed as a main diet.

Other treats the birds get occasionally are:
Spinach

Beet greens

Pumpkin

Grapes

Hot Peppers

Tomatoes

Corn on the cob

Flock Blocks

Swish chard

Zucchini

Etc.

Veggie treats we usually give is around harvest time from our gardens, so everything they get is fresh from the garden.

Flock Blocks I only give out once, or twice in the fall, or winter.

Pulling a spur isn't painful, & I do it as a regular spur managing routine for specific roosters. Others I just trim the pointy tip to blunt them.

Spur isn't connected to the bone, it's held onto the skin by a thin cuticle. Twisting the spur is a quick painless method, they grow back within a month.

I just want you all to know that if you all have rooster care tips, please share them. Yes I started this thread, but this is for all to chime in. How do I stop my rooster, Pastel, from attacking my brother and mom? I need to catch him every Time my mom comes to get the eggs. My brother is scared to get near the chickens from Paatel attacking him. But, seriously, stop going up to the chicken wire and kicking it. I yell at my brother when he does that, just egging (No Pun Intended) Pastel on to attack him.
