From what I have read a 6 month old cockerel would be like a teenage boy with raging hormones. Once he hits a year old things should calm down and he may not need to mate so often. My 8 month old polish cockerel is not really rough with the girls, except he adores my Rhode Island Red. She is the only one that shows any feather damage at all. Apparently she has a lot of chicken sex appeal.I have a 6 month old polish cockerel, he is very rough with the hens and almost constantly after them. Is this something that will ease off as he gets older or can I expect him to always be very rough with them?
I heard that trimming the hen's and the roo's fuzzy bum feathers can help. Never done it but it's worth a try.My Maran-silkie/polish cockerel is about 7 months old. We got him at about 4 months old & most of my 3 hens' eggs are not fertilized. When does the formula become fully leaded, so to speak? He's a great rooster: sweet to us, protective of the ladies. Also, while I have seen him do his rooster business, I haven't seen it that often. In fact, mostly, he seems kind of shy in such things. Is that possible?
Sounds like they will be fine.I think we're getting another silkie cockerel. Six weeks old. We have seven hens and I know we need more, but will he be okay with our six month old chickens for a few months until we get more hens? I have never integrated a single bird into the flock younger then 4 months. We have 8 chickens in all, 1 silkie cockerel already, 4 ISA brown pullets, 1 JG pullet, and 1 silkie pullet. I think the silkie pullet and JG will like him because the JG is super sweet and the silkie has always been nice to other birds.
Okay! Glad to hear that.Sounds like they will be fine.
