Name: Henry
(Nicknames: King Henry, Henry the 1st or Big Henry)
Age: ~2 yrs
Breed: Welsummer
Background: I got Henry from a free ad. He was the scrawniest cockerel there (about 4wks old). I fell in love at first sight... We had other chickens... but they where all adults. As a consequence, Henry was lonely and followed me around... He also found comfort in snuggling in my sweatshirt pocket... which was odd. Even after we picked up some companion pullets for him (2wks later), he still tried to squeeze in that sweatshirt pocket... although he was sadly to big.
He formed a very unusual relationship with our mastiff dog (yeah... she was 120 pounds... he was less than 1 at the time). Henry just hung out with that big dog (even after he got companions) which absolutely thrilled the mastiff... He would lay in the grass between her big paws and she would lay her huge head next to his and lick him... (sadly I do not have photos of that; my camera was out of order).
Henry eventually grew up and turned out to be the best rooster I had ever owned... or met. He is big, watches out for his hens like nobody's business... but yet, is so gentle that little kids come over and play with him. One day, a hawk took interest in the chickens... quickly getting lower... and lower. Henry quickly rounded up his hens into the bushes. Then... he did something strange... He ran out into the middle of the lawn at top speed. He stopped. Then he crowed... and crowed. Apparently he was at least somewhat intimidating because the hawk hesitated in its advance and flew elsewhere.
