Rooster crows constantly.

Hello,

New to the forum. I did lots of research on this site to build my coop. Very informative and I appreciate the site very much.

I have a rooster that crows constantly. All night. All day. It really ramps up around 4:30 AM. Then every half hour or so, it crows 5 or 6 times in a row. Sometimes it’s every 15 minutes. Is my rooster just a jerk, or could I be doing something wrong? They are in a large coop, and a large run. We feed them chicken feed and table scraps. They all seem very healthy. Any advice?

Are there other roosters in hearing range? He could be having a crow battle.

Some roosters just like to crow. But in my experience the younger roosters crow forever, like they discovered their voice and want the whole world to know. Then my older roosters know to only crow in the mornings or to warn of danger.

They are in a large coop, and a large run.

How big is "large", in feet by feet?
Dimensions and pics would help here.
Ages(in weeks) and genders of all birds?

Hello. Thanks for the responses. The chickens are all 6 months old. 6 hens & one rooster. The coop is 16’ x 6’ plus another 4’ x 6’ area. It’s L shaped. The run is 16’ x 16’. I don’t have any photos of the coop/run. I’ll take some tomorrow. It’s brand new and I believe it’s pretty well designed (I did get all my information from this site, so I almost want to say it’s perfect!). My neighbors about 1/4 mile away have chickens, but I rarely hear their birds. I don’t think he’s having a crow battle. I’m pretty sure he’s just a jerk. He’s a little aggressive too. He doesn’t bother me, but he chases my daughter around.

Our neighbor has a rooster who crows day in and day out and has since we moved here 3 years ago. Jerk tried to get in our pen last week. I think he finally got the hint to leave my hens alone.

He just really likes to crow. Crowing isn't inconsiderate in the eyes of a rooster. Chickens don't think that way. He isn't trying to get on your nerves or the nerves of anyone else, he's just telling the world that this is his territory and those are his hens and that nobody will get away with attacking them. Do you hate the crowing? Do others around you? Has he ever spurred your daughter? How is he with the hens? Does he warn them of danger and lead them to food and such? Has he attacked any predators to ward them off? You have to ask yourself if he's worth it, despite his crowing. If the answer is no, give him away, if yes, learn to love him in spite of the noise. If you don't have any close neighbors and you don't hate the sound of crowing, what's the problem? @hysop has a good answer. Some roosters crow more than others. Some crow for food. My mother's crow when they see us and when they want to eat worms, they also crow in the morning. And there's three of them so they crow back and forth for a while. They do stop crowing after a while and then only crow occasionally, (more if we're out there). Also, all animals tend to mellow out as they get older. He may just be in the hormonal teenage years.

Try putting your rooster in a sleepy box at night, some place where he cannot walk around. Let him out when you get up.

(Good idea, they say that dark helps roosters to not crow, and maybe lack of space and hens will surpress the crowing too.)
