Rooster Dying????

So this morning I checked on my roo. His ear looked very clean and not swollen/inflamed like it did before... However his neck is still bad twisted. He keeps it on the ground. It's almost like he's totally upside down or like the proverbial ostrich with his head in the ground. That can't be good for him... I tried propping him up but he moves around a lot and so it doesn't do any good. He is eating and drinking though...

Anyone have any suggestions on how to keep him upright?

I'm glad the ear looks better.

The other side is clear too?

Continue with the vitamin therapy. You may have to try propping him up into position at night when he's sleeping, hopefully that will eventually carry on through to daytime.

Yes, the other side looks clear. However he doesn't want to open his eye on the side with the infection. I've looked at it and other than being white on the outside, I don't see anything abnormal. His pupil reacts when you open the lid. No drainage that I can see. I've been cleaning it regularly with ophthalmic gel. I also was putting neomycin drops in it a couple of times. His refusal to open the eye is the only thing I see now... Other than the severe wry neck.

Still giving him the Amoxicillan. On Day 4 now. Should I go a full 5, 7, or 10 days?

For me, I'd go with 10days. It's twice a day.

Can you get a photo of the eye?

Have you looked inside the beak just to make sure there's no canker or infection in there too? Or that the choanal slit is impacted with material. Just covering everything I can think of.

Ahh, I forgot to look in his mouth. I'll have to do that tomorrow.

Also, I've only been giving him the Amoxicillan once a day... 👉👈👀

This is the left side of his head. It was the side with the ear infection. Notice how white his eyelid and ear are?

By contrast, this is the right side of his head. His eye membrane was flicking which is why his eye looks funny in this picture.

When I set him on the ground, he doesn't even try to stand up except to eat/drink. And his head is twisted almost completely upside down now. 🙁

A little video here -

Poor Guy!
Do you see a discharge or bubbles coming from the eye?

Does he smell bad?

I'm not sure what else you can do for him. I still think the infection may be causing some of his Wry Neck symptoms. Whether the Amoxicillin will knock it out, hard to know.

No bad smell... I think he had some discharge back when his ear was full. I have been carefully cleaning it with an ophthalmic gel and put some neomycin drops in it a few times. Haven't noticed any discharge from the eye since then but I'll pay closer attention over the next few days.

I'll continue with the Amoxicillan for a full 10 days. If there's no improvement, I'll probably have DH just put him down as I'm concerned the neurological damage is permanent. He has absolutely no decent quality of life like this... 🙁

I'm sorry that he's not improving. Such a nice rooster, but I do agree with you about setting a timeline to see improvement.
It's a hard thing to do at times, but you're right, quality of life needs to be considered.

Please keep me posted one way or another. I wish I knew more and could give better suggestions.
