Rooster Flock Thread

Hey all! I just recently took my 4 Leghorn roos and put them in their own pad!!! I have 6 pullets, 3 leggies and 3 red stars, and it was just too many cocks in the henhouse! I put them in the new set up 2 days ago, and yesterday when I went to check on them and feed them and everything, they were crowing, screeching, making all their usual sounds, and then today when I went to see them, at first I thought maybe something happened because I heard NOTHING. I got into the run and everything was fine, all 4 boys were just chilling out, gave me little "hey food lady thanks for the food" noises, but no crows, no screams, no loud clucks, even..... Is that normal? They aren't in sight of the ladies, so I thought maybe that has something to do with it? Or are they mad at me and giving me the silent treatment......

Maybe they are planning a mutiny or having a silent protest.

From what I’ve learned on BYC, out of sight of the hens is the best way to keep a flock of roosters.

Sounds normal to me. In my experience, roosters are louder when they are trying to impress the hens.

They are getting used to the new pad! They are crowing again, the silent treatment seems to be over, so that makes me happy, I love those crows!!! They are so much more easy going, they act like they can just breathe easier or something.

We're renovating our house and living with my parents in law, so at the moment, I don't live at the house with my girl chickens at the moment, so right now I don't get to spend time with ANY of my chickens like I wish I could, so I don't really feel like I'm ''ignoring" the boys, because I'm ignoring ALL of them, if that makes sense...... BUT the roos enjoy my company when I'm there, but don't seem to be lonesome or upset with less human attention. I never thought that roosters could be friends, but they really do seem to enjoy each other's company, and aren't really bothered that there are no ladies around.

Now I have to convince myself to NOT have a rooster rescue......

Good morning rooster people!!!! Curious if anyone has an opinion on feed blocks. Looking on my favorite website and they have a "flock block" that I'm thinking about. 25 pounds of seed and grain, thinking about putting it up on a ledge in the run. Any suggestions? Glanced at the reviews, they're pretty mixed.

I actually went through the same thing as you when I moved my roosters into their own bachelor pad. I had 3 months of renovations to do and only saw them a couple of times a week when I'd top up their feed and water and barely spent more than a couple of minutes with them each time. They went from being awesome with me to being a bit aggressive. I've managed to reel the aggression back in and they know who's head honcho, but I wish I'd have spent a bit more time with them each time I'd visit. Please give them a pat and a chat to keep them used to you!

As for the flock block, it depends on the chicken/rooster. My roosters care less about treats than the hens, but it can't hurt to try. They're reasonably cheap and are probably better for the roos than the standard layer feed. At the very least it'll keep them occupied and if you hang them on some twine, they'll be entertained.

I'm so heartbroken. Something got into the rooster house overnight, I lost all 4. And it's COMPLETELY my fault, I KNEW I needed a better door. I am so upset with myself, I led my boys to slaughter. I couldn't even clean out the run, I was so upset. I will later, and maybe in a few years I might fix the coop up better and try again, but I don't know. I'm really REALLY mad at me!!!!
