Rooster lethargic with green and yellow diarrhea

Thanks Alison,

It might be tricky getting hubby to use Valbazen.  I just PM'd Cari about it - hubby, being a vet, sort of gets irritated when I tell him what "those online people" recommend, hehe.  But, if I procure some, I'm sure he'll use it.

Here's some information I got from dawg53, he's the resident expert on deworming:

Large round worms are skinny and up to 3 inches long. Cecal worms are actually another type of roundworm but smaller 1/4"-2"...nasty buggars. Wazine wont kill cecal worms, only large roundworms. Valbazen kills all known worms that chickens can get. If you still have some wazine, use it. Dosage is one ounce per gallon of water. Set the wazine water out for them in the morning BEFORE you let them out, they are usually thirsty when first let out and will drink the water. Ten days later, dose them with the valbazen....that will kill any and all worms for sure. You might want to worm them semi annually afterwards.

Valbazen liquid cattle/sheep wormer. You can get it from Jefferslivestock.com or call them. They ship it pretty quick. Dosage is 1/2cc for standard size chickens and 1/4cc for smaller chickens. It is given orally...shoot it right down their throat...guaranteed worming. There's a 14 day egg withdrawal. Jim.

hahaha! I totally get the husband thing. The important thing is to rotate dewormers and to make sure they're killing the type of worm that is affecting the chickens. :)

Yep that is all the info I have that I suggested.

Valbazen really is best as it kills ALL types of worms where the other ones don't.

My rooster just died! Same symptoms. I believe it's Ulcerative Enteritis. I couldn't find anything online that directly pointed to this problem, and I'm so angry at myself because I had some Amoxilicin in the fridge, which might have helped!

So, if you have a chicken that has watery white poop, chalky looking (sometimes accompanied by green pellet-like poop), ruffled feathers, treat it preventively BEFORE it becomes lethargic.

I unfortunately didn't take pictures of the poop, which could have helped others with this problem.

The other possible disease was Pollurum, which was highly unlikely, but is also treated with a penicillin derivative.

I hope this helps someone because putting an end to my rooster's suffering was one of the hardest things I have ever done!

Welcome to BYC. Sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, it is impossible to diagnose illnesses from droppings most of the time. A vet may test for it with a gram stain or culture. There are 2 types of enteritis--necrotic and ulcerative. Ulcerative enteritis is more of a quail disease, but milder in chickens. Enteritis can cause bloody droppings, and there can be undigested feed or seeds in it as well. Coccidiosis can be a contributing factor to both types. Here are a few links to read about the 2 kinds of enteritis:
