Rooster lost hackle feather

I just can't imagine how you can grab your rooster by the hackle feathers and get that much of a handful unless it was intentional. And in the original post, they worded it as if they were looking for approval for their actions...and I tried to give them a break in my first post but....whatevs.

Too many bowls of wheaties and just didn’t know her own strength. 🤣

Nah give her a break grabbing feathers and pulling back and him pulling forward to get away can easily result in a handful of feathers. Some birds feathers pull out much easier than others too.
Thanks. I think he moved as I was reaching because it was a lot more feathers than I expected, and I didn’t expect them to come out. So you don’t think I should try to examine his neck? If I went into the coop with a headlamp, I think he’d wake up.

If there was skin on the base of feathers it won’t hurt to take a look. If the skin is messed up anywhere some neosporin or something similar would be fine.

I’ll go pull the feathers off the compost bin and check for skin. Some of the feathers were stuck together at the base, so I thought that might be skin holding them together, but it was still pretty dark so I’m not sure.

That’s really interesting - I think there’s a misunderstanding here. What part of my post made you think I was looking for approval?

Eh I’d just check the bird real quick. If the skin isn’t torn anywhere no big deal. If it is just lather on some neosporin and he’ll be fine.

Poor guy got a hair cut. I agree, feather pulling won't help. I would just bring a stick for protection because if you hurt him then he will see you as a threat and get more agressive cause he'll worry you'll do it to the ladies. My older rooster and I sometimes don't see eye to eye but if the behavior continues for about a week we pend some one on one time together and he'll be fine for a few months. He's just trying to prove that he's bigger and better. He has to learn that you AND him work to protect the ladies. So basically i would stop the feather pulling and check his skin tonight.
