I am so sorry that you are having to give up your rooster, but I am glad that you will still be able to see him. I'm glad that you had many viewpoints and were able to make your own decision, in your own time.

Just please be sure to monitor his mood for the first few weeks. That he is not depressed, losing weight or looking ill.

This will be a big shock for him, in a lot of ways. A new home, the loss of you, strange new chickens putting him in his place in their flock, change in diet I'm sure too. Chickens don't like change, so its going to be a bit stressful for him at first until he adjusts.

that took the time to read my thread.
Thank you also to all of you that read it but chose not to comment,
your thoughts were enough.

I really appreciated all of your input and insights in this situation.
No matter what side you were on, you both helped me see
trough different eyes and experiences.
Thank you for your stories, your photos, your ideas, your suggestions, all the love,
your jokes, your researching, your poem, your likes, your laughs, your tears, your time, etc.

This was a very tough decision that I had to make
and it is with a broken heart that I tell you this.

But I have decided to take Hei Hei to live with his parents. This will be the best thing for him and I will miss him greatly. He is very smart and he will learn and adapt to his new normal rooster life. I have faith that he will. He will have access to what a normal rooster needs and wants and he will be safe. And as for a non-normal rooster, he will still see his mommy every chance I get. I will make sure he never forgets me, because as long as I live, I will never forget him. He is the most awesomeness rooster you could ever ask for. We had only four months together, but we did so much in those months, that it felt like years. I will start introducing him to his new flock little by little starting tomorrow.

You have a big heart & no he will never forget you...there was a true movie about a lion named Elsa once, "Born Free" & she never forgot who loved & raised her as a cub before setting her free in the wild. It's an old movie but still a tear jerker! Maybe you could take him for a few visits that gradually get longer, let him get the hang of it & learn to adjust. Birds do dislike drastic changes, but they are smart & like to learn, with their curios nature, many do better a bit at a time. We did that often with success rehoming Macaws after 911...Macaws grieve deeply for deceased owners, all rescues in the network at the time did rehome in stages with visits, that way the parrots did not end up more traumatized, plucking themselves bald or turning mean...but while a large parrot is a different breed of bird, that method might be considered. Whatever you decide, I hope all goes as well as can be. Hugs to both of you.

You've made the right choice. No offense to anyone who has "house birds" of any kind but I humbly suggest that birds should be outside, with a nice safe place to roost at night.

I'm sorry I didn't see your post last night. Thank you. I don't think I am getting all of my notifications.

I have had to take a pragmatic approach to having animals. I'm a softy on the inside and have been heartbroken before with the loss of pets, that's why I don't have any now. Although I truly care about my birds I go into it knowing that all of them will be gone one day, one way or another. My birds are a source of enjoyment, watching their silly antics, but they are also a source of eggs and meat. It is the cycle of life and although I don't enjoy doing it at all and it's emotionally difficult for me, I do my own butchering. While they are here I speak sweetly to them, protect them, and take good care of them.
