I'm new to this website AND raising chickens. Recently, I noticed that my rooster was acting strange. He wasn't eating as much, nor would he move much. I assumed it was because of the cold or he was stressed because he was attacked by an owl recently. Luckily, he had no injuries and seemed fine despite the attack. But then he stopped crowing. I decided to observe his behavior and his chest sounds congested, almost like when a human is sick and they have phlegm in their lungs. He would open his beak as if gasping for air, his nose is runny and so are his eyes. I read online that it might be a respiratory infection but I'm not sure. Is this something severe?

Hi, and welcome to BYC!

I'm wondering if the owl got him with its claws, as a toenail may have pierced his lungs.

He'll need an antibiotic if that's the case. Can you look him over very closely to see if you can see a puncture wound?

In the meantime, do you have any Poultry Cell, Nutri-Drench, or other poultry vitamins? I'd get him on some to help him fight whatever it is.
