Rooster Swollen Eye seeking advise

Vet agrees that it was caused by trauma originally. Gave me some Tylosin. He probably has a secondary infection. He is no longer eating or drinking on his own so I’ve been giving water via syringe. Today he does not look good but I already paid for the vet visit so I might as well try with the anti biotics. I force fed him some scrambled egg today. Hopefully that brings his energy levels up a little bit I don’t have much hope.

I would also try adding some Tylosin water to a small bowl of chicken feed, and mixing into a thin mash, to get more water into him. How much Tylosin are you putting into the water or giving orally? Did the vet order any eye drops or ointment? Poultry NutriDrench or Poultry Cell 3 ml daily can also be given as a boost to possibly help his appetite. I agree their could be something stuck inside his third eyelid or inside the conjunctiva. Does it smell normal around the eye?

I hope the Tylosin helps. You can try mixing in some raw egg yolk, a little sugar to the water you are giving him. However you give fluid with a syringe, just go slowly enough that he has the chance to swallow, don't give more than .5 ml before allowing him to swallow, that helps reduce the chance that he will aspirate any. I hope he starts to feel better with the meds.

Thank you I do too. I fed him scrambled eggs today. I got about half an egg into him. I was considering trying to syringe some chick mash into him (thought it’d be easier than the bigger feed and probably won’t hurt (open to advise). I have been giving him electrolyte water but I could definitely do poultry cell.

Vet did not order anything. She said topical medication probably won’t do much. She is having me mix about 1/4 tsp of the Tylosin powder in with water. She didn’t actually tell me how many times per day but I’m assuming twice. He smells a little more chickeny than my healthy birds but he’s also in confinement which I think makes their smell a little more obvious. He doesn’t smell much different than a normal chicken smell and the eye itself doesn’t seem to smell worse.

If it is just an infection or injury, keeping fluids and food going into him as he fights it off with the help of the meds is worth trying for. Personally, I would be tempted to soak a rag in very warm dissolved Epsom salt water and drape or hold it gently on the affected area every now and then if he will tolerate it, to help with swelling relief. Please keep us updated!

I did a warm compress the first day. He really didn’t like it but I will try again. The vet did also recommend this.
