Rooster too aggressive tore my hens neck

Roosters going in the stew pot. But in the meantime, I have to deal With this hens gaping wound. Any advice on how to dress it or patch it up...I was totally unprepared for dealing with this type of wound. Anybody ever stitch their hens?

no pic huh? i have heard of stitching , someone even used a horse tail hair. but i guess it depends on the wound. personally i think healing from the inside out is best. isolate, flush with sterile water and use some triple antibiotic ( not the kind w/ pain reliver in it. its toxic) heat and time. someone also gave baths with epsom salts for infection. then rooster and dumplings.

I was just reading another thread where a hawk tore a hens neck and people were saying to superglue it if there is enough skin to pull together. I know when people have wounds they will sometimes use superglue. Its worth a shot. I hope she heals, good luck!

I can't quite tell from the picture, but I think you could use your judgement to decide if it should be sewn or glued shut. If it's not too deep, you could just let it heal up on its own, but either way, you will want to clean that up with hydrogen peroxide or betadine.

After seeing the picture I had to wonder, are you sure it was your rooster and not a hawk?

Definitely agree with the peroxide and betadine, you could also use peroxide and alcohol.

My wife seen it happen...the rooster was chasing her around the pen and pecking at her...

i still say let it heal from inside out. infection is hard to treat with it closed unless you get some by mouth.
