Our Rooster was attacked last night by a raccoon. Luckily we were quick enough to run outside and stop it before it became too serious and we killed the raccoon. Thankfully we have a pretty large and rugged rooster, the only thing wrong with him is he is missing a lot of his long tail feathers and has some scrapes on the top of his head. He is still on edge a little bit today so we have been unable to really look him over. There is no visible blood anywhere. Knowing raccoons carry a lot of diseases what have some people given to their chickens/roosters as a preventative just in case. I was thinking of giving him some electrolytes?

How is your rooster?

Inspect him closely for any wounds, rinse those well with saline, diluted betadine, warm soapy water, etc. Apply Vetericyn or triple antibiotic ointment to the wounds.

If he is stressed, electrolytes or poultry vitamins added to the water for a couple of days won't hurt. See that he is drinking well and eating.

No Wounds just a lot of missing tail feathers and a couple wing feathers. He is pretty much back to himself. The electrolytes perked him up the next day and hes been eating and drinking no problem :thumbsup
