Rooster Went Nuts...Brutally Attacked Hen (MORE PHOTOS ADDED)

My first thought when I saw her was "Crap, she's going to have to be put down". Honestly, it was very hit and miss there for the first couple days afterward. She was pretty close to going on the 2nd day of the Penicillin injection...I didnt think she'd make it through the night at that point. If anything, the wound was worse in person than the pictures show.

you have to decide on a case-by-case - it's a balance between now bad the injury is, how much time you can give to care, and how much pain you can justify asking the animal to withstand in the healing process. animals can heal from some things you wouldn't think possible, and faster than you expect - we've had sheep mauled a couple of times in 15 years, some we've put down, some we've treated and survived, some we've treated and didn't. the ones that we treated had some significant injuries, but we could treat effectively. our vet says he's seen remarkable healing in animals... but still you have to always make the choice to balance the pain vs. the chance to heal.

anyway, great job on the nursing work!

Sorry to bring this old one thread back to life, I just had this happen yesterday. I feel so bad cuz this pullet was the only surviver form a dog attack some how escaped with no harm. She belonged to a friend of mine. So my friend gave her to me. I've had her about a week. I currently have 2 pens set up a 8x12 and a 6x12. The 6x12 has juveniles 3 months old I have 7. The 8x12 has 2 ISA brown hens and a mixed rooster ( he's the sweetest thing ever) so when this 6 month pullet came I figured I put her in the bigger pen. Problem is one of my hens. She viciously kills birds that go into in the coop. Attacked the juveniles when they where out free ranging together. And now this. Its 115 the other day 120 and she religiously lays everyday hasn't missed a day in 5 months. And she is fine with the one other hen and her rooster who spoiled them. I'm sooo sickened with this hen I'm hoping this little pullet pulls through. Today is day 2

Oh and I kept a good eye on them they where roosting together eating together she got picked on a little but nothing viciously. The rooster actually kept the other two hens from picking on her to much. Which surprised me. But I have seen this her in action and she is the devil.... So after a week I thought allwas all gonna be alright. Yesterday I was woke up by the dogs barking and went out and found her up in one corner with her head up under the fence. My friend said they used to dig out of her coop and go under that's how she lost the other ones. I have heavey chain link pens with roofs on them. So it may be possible that she got her head stuck up under the chain link. But after reading this thread I'm thinking that hen must have blown up. She did have blood on her face. The other rooster and hen did not. Or if she got stuck and was flailing the jen may have gone after her then? Any way I have hope that the little girl pulls through

I would spray her wound with saline or Vetericyn, and apply some plain Neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment 1-2 times daily. Place her in a dog crate or pen near the chickens, so they become more familiar. When her wound has healed some, You could coat it with iodine or BluKote, and let her out. Then put the bully in isolation for a few days to lower her standing. Make sure to supervise while they get acquainted out in the yard. Or place her with the juveniles. If she is alert, able to walk, eat and drink, she should recover.

Yes she is in my hospital pen that one of my juveniles just came out of 4 days ago :/ that one healed in abt two weeks I used Neosporin she had a hole it was ugly but nothing like this! This poor baby is scalped. Its hot here 115° so I have her on the north side of my house on my patio I did get her to drink some water this morning :) and she opened her eyes. I'll keep putting medicine on its so hot here the stuff just melts off. So I'll try 3 or 4 times a day. Wish me luck and thank u for ur response. I like ur idea of taking bully hen out and separating her for a while To a just he attitude

What we have here is an immature cockerel and pullet who are acting like young chickens have always acted. The natural order is that the strongest cock bird is the boss bird. The cockerel is only trying to fulfill his ethos but the pullet thinks she is the flock leader. Once the cockerel fully matures and exerts his leadership things will settle down. In a natural flock there will be a 2 or maybe a 3 year old rooster who would knock this youngster around and keep him under control until he is fully mature. Now you can like this situation or you can hate it but you can't do a lot to change it. The fastest way to resolve it is to cull the pullet, the cockerel or both the pullet and the cockerel. Read previous threads and notice how when situations like your's arise there is always a young cockerel at the heart of it.

I have just this one pullet who is scalped right now my 2 year old roster is not a problem I have a really nasty hen. I may end up culling the hen I'm gonna try and take her out and hope she looses her dominance thus her killing attitude. I have to pick updead black birds every day because of her. She is a really good layer and is OK in the trio she is currently with. But I want to have more hens. And would like it if she would stop trying to kill everything

Since she is a good layer, you could probably rehome her easily. Would it be easier to have the hurt one inside so that you can get her to eat and drink often? Once she is helping herself, she could go back outside in her crate.

Im gonna try and what u first suggested and isolate her before I try and put anybody eles in that pen. I would feel really bad giving my problem to someone else. I think that if she is still aggressive after being isolated she is probably not gonna stop. Another option I can do is get another coop just for the trio and just keep them in thr own space and know that I can never I put anyone into that coop with her. So I guess I do have at least three options for miss devil. Little pullet is not eating so far. I have been able to get her to drink and she is opening her eyes now and moving around. But I can't get her to eat I've tried corn bread scratch scrambled egg peached. Hope she will try and eat something soon :(
