First of all I just joined this website, I am hoping for some help with my (about 1 year old) Rhode Island Red Rooster named King.

His leg is broken.

He was loose for about 3 1/2 hours, he went deep into the woods, and we excited him a bit to much because I panicked but we eventually caught him. When we did catch him we found him sitting down.

His hock (I think that is what it is called) on his left leg is swelled up, and he can't walk.

We made this little pen for him that won't allow him to move his legs. It is a cardboard box with soft cloth stapled over the top of it, with food and water in the front attached to a piece of wood and we cut two openings in the cloth for his feet to go through.

He has diarrhea and his face looks a little pale. We put him in the little pen that won't allow him to move his legs last night, when he broke his leg about a week ago. Yesterday and all of the previous days he was in the chicken coop with the 16 hens.

His little pen is in the garage.

I don't know what to do to help him, he doesn't look that happy at all. His vent is dirty, but I don't know what to clean it with (He is my first rooster in about 10 years and none of my chickens have ever broken their legs)

His comb and wattle are bright and pinkish red, but they have scabs on them because the hens were pecking him. Two of his toes also look broken.

Please tell me ANYTHING that I can do to help him, I love my rooster, and I don't want him to die, I just really want him to get better. Please help me, please.

He does not have any kind of cast or splint on his leg or toes.

The closest vet to us that takes care of chickens is 4 hours away, I am thinking about bringing him their, but I am not sure if they can do anything or not.

Also his legs are cool (I was told if a chicken's legs are hot then they have a fever, I am not sure if that is correct or not), they aren't that hot at all.

His left hock is swelled up about 2-4 times the size of the other leg.

Is there any medicine I can give him or cream or something that can help his leg, toes, scabs on his comb and wattle or basically anything that I can do to help him.

I'm not sure if we can post pictures on here or not, but if we can post pictures or post links to pictures, please tell me so I can show you what he looks like right now. If we can post pictures or links to pictures and if you can help me please ask me what to take a picture of of my rooster (Legs, hocks, toes, face, etc.)

Please help me, please.

poor thing, I know someone with more chicken medical knowledge will chime in soon. As far as hisrear you can trim the but feathers with scissors and als wash him with warm water and mild soap. I am sure vet wrap will be metioned, but not sure how you go about splinting his leg. Hopefully this will bump it up so you get more help.

Yes, you can post pictures, get some up soon so someone who knows how to help can see what is wrong. I am so sorry about your roo but help is coming!!

(I am sorry, I don't know much about medical issues with chickens)

Thank you for replying. I'll clean up his vent today, he is sleeping at the moment and I don't want to wake him up.
I have found 3 veterinary offices that specialize in poultry, but they are about 4 hours away each, but I want to do everything I can do for King. I am going to give them all a call and ask questions as well before I bring him anywhere.

This question is for anyone to answer. Will he get depressed being isolated from his hens? Should I carry him in the chicken coop or something every day, or not?

Any advice would be appreciated.

And okay, I am going to get some pictures of him know. How do I get the pictures on this website? html code, link...?

If I understand you he has had this injury for a week now? If his leg is broke a vet is what you be needed. You could give him a bath to clean his backside. i would make up some scrambled eggs and yogurt to help boost his protein I hope someone else with more chicken knowledge post soon.

Yes, we think he broke his leg about a week to a week and a half ago.

I will call the vet today and see if there is anything they can do.

Go to the top of the page and you will see "Uploads" click it and from there you can upload your pics to this site. I think others use html codes and links too but I have good luck using the "Uploads" feature.

If he has been walking on it I don't think its broke, might be a slipped tendon. I would keep him in a quiet dark place with food and water, and let him rest and see how he is tomorrow.

He can't walk at all. When he was in the chicken coop, he just sat on the ground and he did not put any effort into trying to walk at all.
