First of all I just joined this website, I am hoping for some help with my (about 1 year old) Rhode Island Red Rooster named King.
His leg is broken.
He was loose for about 3 1/2 hours, he went deep into the woods, and we excited him a bit to much because I panicked but we eventually caught him. When we did catch him we found him sitting down.
His hock (I think that is what it is called) on his left leg is swelled up, and he can't walk.
We made this little pen for him that won't allow him to move his legs. It is a cardboard box with soft cloth stapled over the top of it, with food and water in the front attached to a piece of wood and we cut two openings in the cloth for his feet to go through.
He has diarrhea and his face looks a little pale. We put him in the little pen that won't allow him to move his legs last night, when he broke his leg about a week ago. Yesterday and all of the previous days he was in the chicken coop with the 16 hens.
His little pen is in the garage.
I don't know what to do to help him, he doesn't look that happy at all. His vent is dirty, but I don't know what to clean it with (He is my first rooster in about 10 years and none of my chickens have ever broken their legs)
His comb and wattle are bright and pinkish red, but they have scabs on them because the hens were pecking him. Two of his toes also look broken.
Please tell me ANYTHING that I can do to help him, I love my rooster, and I don't want him to die, I just really want him to get better. Please help me, please.
He does not have any kind of cast or splint on his leg or toes.
The closest vet to us that takes care of chickens is 4 hours away, I am thinking about bringing him their, but I am not sure if they can do anything or not.
Also his legs are cool (I was told if a chicken's legs are hot then they have a fever, I am not sure if that is correct or not), they aren't that hot at all.
His left hock is swelled up about 2-4 times the size of the other leg.
Is there any medicine I can give him or cream or something that can help his leg, toes, scabs on his comb and wattle or basically anything that I can do to help him.
I'm not sure if we can post pictures on here or not, but if we can post pictures or post links to pictures, please tell me so I can show you what he looks like right now. If we can post pictures or links to pictures and if you can help me please ask me what to take a picture of of my rooster (Legs, hocks, toes, face, etc.)
Please help me, please.
