Roosters crow at night?

A few years back we stayed at a friends place way out in the country (no extra lighting) both hubby and I had a difficult time sleeping as they had a rooster that crowed about once an hour all night long. Neither knew the rooster crowed all night becuase unlike us city folk at the time with no chickens they had chickens for a long time and slept through most "normal" country noises

I had roosters crow in the middle of the night when I came home and they saw the headlights of my truck.
I never heard a rooster crow to warn of danger.
they make a different noise.
I only had one rooster out of hundreds that was mean.. he went into the soup..

My coop is about 100 ft. from the road, and I'm guessing that the boys crow when car headlights pass by, or a noisy truck, in addition to critters coming past the coop at night.

Mine only crows in the middle of the night if there is a predator out there. Twice he has alerted me and was right. Other then that he crows maybe once a day other then in the morning. Lately I've been leaving lights on because of raccoons and they are fine with the light.
