Roosters for Rooster

I have heard people all my life say that you should never feed chicken bones to a dog because they'll choke on them or something. But then a nice old man at my church told me about how he feeds chicken bones - the cooked kind - to his dogs, and he told me about one little bone on the drum stick that can cause a problem - and otherwise to just hand feed them to your dog, and they'll be fine. I've been feeding all my chicken bones to my dog ever since. I've had no problems. My dog LOVES chicken bones, and it provides her with lots of calcium and other nutrients from the marrow.

Chicken bones are great for dogs, cooked or otherwise.

The only problem with cooked bones is that they can become brittle and splinter. Once the cooked bones are in the dogs stomache they shouldn't cause a problem but there could potentialy be an issue with the actuall eating of the cooked bones. My dog gets whole carcasses and loves them. Look at it this way. If you set a bag of dog food in the woods beside a chicken carcass which would a wolf eat?

Thought I'd post ya'll a pic of Rooster having dinner.

My wolf ate a chicken a day! He never touched dog food, but was happy to open the cans for the dogs and cats to share . . . yes large size dog food cans with his teeth!
p.s. Rooster is awful cute, glad you take such good care of him!

My girls would love him! If I could find a regisgtered male around here I might think of breeding. Everyone keeps wanting me to breed to whatever is wandering around but I don't want to do that.

I defininately reccomend not breeding to anything that doesn't meet the breed standard.

Am surprised that one chicken is enough for Rooster. I feed raw, usually 2% to 4% of the dog's weight per day. My Irish Wolfhounds get about 4-5 lbs a day, but not just chicken. Also give some other meats, rabbit-beef-pork-goat-duck-turkey-goose-what have you. Just chicken isn't enough variety nor nutrition. Eggs would be good for him, as well as some raw veggies.
When my layers are spent, they are processed and used for the dogs. Mine like chicken necks and chicken feet for treats.
Good Luck with your project. Rooster is a lucky dog!
