roosters

A thank you to all who responded to the sex of the mystery chicken. As you may remember I bought 5 pullets but one has surprisingly become not as claimed! Well he is still not making a noise as yet, growing up nicely, had big bones, I have picked him up and he is very strong with big bones and big feet at only little over 4 months! I will keep you all posted as to what happens. I have a friend who has a farm with free range chickens and no rooster. He had one but a bobcat came at sundown before he locked them up and killed it and took it away. (the farmer tracked it in the mud and saw the tracks) Sooooooooooo, I think he might be open to a rooster.

I was going to ask when should this rooster begin to act like a male; but yesterday I did see him, at 4 months mount a hen and later another. He has no spurs as yet, Also one large 2 year old Rhode Island red hen chases him and he runs from her!! Will the day come when he will fight her or will a hen be dominant in the flock?

My RIR rooster looked like yours, and started crowing around 4Months. Some days he is quiet, other days he crows more- luckily not constant or enough to be too annoying. I was very nervous about having a rooster (I ordered 6 girls and ended up with him), anticipated giving him away, but I learned to just play it by ear and see how it goes day by day. They are all about 10 months old now and are doing well. He doesn't really have full grown Spurs yet; they are about a half-inch nubs still. Good luck!

Sad ending, I bought the collar but it still did not muffle his crowing; Neighbors did complain. So I found him a home out in the country where a young man had 9 hens and wanted a rooster. I checked out the place, very nice, with a great coop. I miss him raising him from a chick, strange one can miss a chicken!

That is not a sad ending - that is a happy ending, especially for the rooster.

Good morning, Yes it was for the rooster.
