Roosterwith frostbite!

It was a large dog or something that got him, they went through the fence.

I've already put antibiotic ointment on his wounds.

He ate alittle and drank some, but as soon as his put his head down, the water ran out of his mouth.

If he ate, that is a good sign. Maybe he got some water down too, before his head got floppy. He could be exhausted, maybe let him sleep some.

If it was a dog bite you will also probably want to give him antibiotic. It would be a good idea to flush the puncture wounds with saline solution and then re-cover them with antibiotic ointment. Every little thing helps.

The missing areas probably will not grow back. We have a roo who got really bad frostbite on his comb, I don't know, last year or the year before. All the points fell off, and it is just straight across now. We felt bad for him, and it must've hurt, but he is impossible to catch and roosts in the rafters at night, so there wasn't much we could do for him at the time. He did recover ok, and is the boss roo now...he is still a handsome guy. My daughter commented that it's too bad there isn't some type of waterer that, when the chicken sticks their head in to get a drink, it would apply vaseline to their comb as they're sticking their head in. If you're going to put anything on the frostbitten comb, be extremely gentle.

Saline is a good idea. It is very healing. We used it for our roo when he got in a fight. One of the best things you can do is give him a place to rest where he can do that and not be harassed by any other animals; basically just give him a chance to rest. I've been told that rinsing the mouth with saline is good for shock, but I have never tried this.

Thanks everyone

Its 10:30pm now and he is still alive. He is warm and looks up at me when walk into the room. He has ate alittle bit more and is drinking lots of water.

Hope he is doing well...The black parts on his comb tips will fall off, and won't grow back....keep putting the antibotic ointment or cream on his comb with a Q-tip helps....
