Roosting perches

My chicks are 12 days old and they roost on the 20 in. plastic feeder I am starting a coop hopefully tomorrow if weather is good. I was thinking of putting a small roosting pole in the brooder box last 2 days 6 out of 10 chicks are stiing on top of the 20 in. feeder trough with flip top the plastic one.

We have had a dowel in with the baby's since we bought them home 1 week old. They play on it and it is fun to watch them try and sleep on it
they are like weebles wabble but they don't fall down. Our Orphingtons sleep very well on the dowel the Speeckled Sussexs just look at it and try
it every once in a while. The girls have doubled in size they are 3weeks Sunday.

I have been using plastic storage tubs as brooders for my 30 something chicks.. They are 3 wks on monday.. I had to go out and purchase an "outdoor" play area from the local pet store (the ones that would be used for small animals) to place around my "brooders" to keep the little buggers in.. they like to fly up to the tops of the bins and roost on the edges.. Mine are RIRs

Last week I had 6 of my chicks escaping and running through the house ALL THE TIME.. because they liked to roost up top and they would fall the wrong way.. lol.

I built a small version of the stair step type that is in the coop so maybe they will get the idea what it is for. So far they are using it.Some of the braver ones try to fly to the second or third rung from the ground. Some make it, some don't..

What are your nighttime and winter temps? I'm in the desert, but we can get some cold snaps. And some breeds are more cold hardy than others. I don't anticipate mine roosting during the heat of the day, so we went with square roosts. I assume they would spread out if they get too hot.... fwiw, ymmv.

We had a stick for a roost when we brought them home, and really right away, they were jumping off and on; fighting over the sweet spot, lol. They love it!

We put a wooden papertowel holder into our brooder. It has a dowell that the chicks love to hop onto. They still snuggle together on the ground when they go to sleep, but the play on the roost.

I just layed a stick in there last night and propped on the edge. It's only about an inch round. I din't thin of using bigger logs to get them used to it. Maybe I will try that.

I cut 2 1in pieces of 2x4 and tacked a 1/2in x 8in. piece of pine o=====o kinda looks like that they love it took 2 days for all 10 to figure out how to use it now its fun to watch one get settled and have another push her off I'll make a longer one but it keeps them amused. I think it will deff. encourage pecking order lol

my chicks started jumping and playing on roosts at a week old. one or two of them started roosting at about three weeks and now they roost on anything that sits above the wood shavings ... this includes the walls. They knock the walls over daily and I am trying to finish their coop as soon as possible.
